Hello,
I'm a canadian PR working in the US. I need to decide if I need to import my car to canada.if you can provide me some information regarding this it will be very helpful.
(a) I have a 2001 Nissan sentra. the current price of this car in the US is $3500. If I sell this car in the US and buy a new car in canada would there be a big difference in price I have to Pay in canda? How much would I be saving if I import the car?
(b) I know that I do not have to pay any import duty when I import car to canada. What would be the total cost involved to import the car to canada and register it in canada?
(C) I'm going to leave the car with my friend here in USA, go to india for vacation and then come to canada from india. So when I come to canada my friend would come to the border and hand over the car. is this possible or I will have to be in the US and then bring the car to canada?
Please let me know the answers to these questions
Thanks
Go through this link for the process of importing a vehicle into canada from US.
http://www.riv.ca/ImportingAVehicle.aspx
If you are a returning resident then i beleive you have 10,000 exempt free of duty but you still have to pay taxes i guess which may be negligable. There is lot of pre import process you need to do like getting a recall clearance letter, faxing the original title documents to US customs border atleast 72 hours before importing. It is best that you need to call & confirm with US border that they received the fax atleast 72 hrs or there are chances they you might be struck at the border as they wont allow if they dont receive the fax.
Do some research on internet & calling dealers if it is even worth bringing 2001 car. I bought my car recently & for me it was worth importing.
I dont know answer to (C).
make sure you read the riv website & understand all the requirements in bringing a vehicle. Not all vehicles are eligible to import & thats the first thing you should check.
Once the vehicle is imported then registering, licensing your vehcile is a smooth process ( atleast it went smooth for me).
Good Luck.

I was planning to come to canada sometime in december and it is going to be very cold during that time. Having a car would help in searching for a job.
Is the public transportation good enough and can we manage to look for a job in that winter without a car?

Yeah, having a car will help in winter. Did anyone had trouble with RIV? my process went smoothly & i did everything online like paying RIV fee, faxing the recall letter . The whole process took me just 3-4 days including vehicle inspection, getting new registered license plate & even received compliance label sent by RIV.
Satya,
What was your total cost of importing?
Thanks
