how about yours

Read up on something called the "Dawn Phenomenen"
Im still trying to "beat it' and its hit and miss.

basically your liver dumps glucose into your blood stream just before you awake.
To avoid it, my doctor has suggestd taking a small snack before sleeping:

ie/ apple, some milk/bread
I usually take peanut butter and some milk

that can bring your fasting BG to within a normal range..but you will have to see what works for you.

Hey,

Yes i think so. According to a study I read The rise of diabetes in Canada is due to the large # of immigrants from South Asia.

Sugar itself doesnt cause Diabetes directl. It is mostly inherited. Being overweight though can reduce insulin resisistance.

Perhaps South asians are sedentary??

May be you meant not being overweight can reduce insulin resistance.

yes. Losing 10% of weight can also increase insulin sensitivity. Its hard to do though, because most normal 'diet's are high in carbohydrates which is difficult for a diabetic.

Hey MR,

Thanks for the info. I agree that south Asians tend to be sedentary has it got to do with diet or is it low testosterone levels? People with low testosterone have lower energy drives, less muscle and more abdominal fat. My mom used to lead a very active life style before marriage and even represented her province in basketball, athletics etc. My dad was in the university when my sister and me were born so there was very little money in the house and they lived on tomato soup and rice. So after childbirth my mom lost energy and gradually became overweight. I think the cause for this could be the lack of proteins and essential nutrients in the diet when she needed it most. I feel so sorry for her but that’s life in a poor/developing country :(

What are the symptoms of diabetes/ high blood sugar?

According to the American diabetes Association, symptoms are:
Frequent urination
Excessive thirst
Extreme hunger
Unusual weight loss
Increased fatigue
Irritability
Blurry vision

These can indicate other things though. You should speak to your doctor and get tested.

Why do so many Indian women say they were athletic before they got married? Why dont they continue their exersize after marriage? If they are busy with children - can they not find time? Sorry for my ignorance.

MR,

Some of the reasons for the lack of exercise are

1.Lower energy levels caused by a number of factors the primary reason being the lack of adequate diet. Around 80% of the populations survive on less than $2 a day.

2.The hot and humid weather plus the fact that women had to wear saris or salwar kameez makes it difficult for them to exercise and sweat it out.

3.Space is a big constraint in cities like Mumbai where you have to jostle and push the person in front of you when walking.

4.A mother cannot leave her toddler alone and go for exercise. Since apartments are cramped and safety standards are negligible the child may accidentally swallow something.

5.Resources like water and electricity are very limited till this day. Families store water (again in their cramped apartments) and its used as a luxury. So after sweating it out in the humid weather a woman cannot afford the luxury of a bath. Plus the frequent power cuts makes life miserable.

Hi

I assumed that those women who were athletic in school/colleges were from middle class (ie able to afford education) families. Would there be diet concerns there as well?

Secondly - I see many women exersizing or just walking in salwaar kameez suits here. Perhaps its harder in India due to the weather.

I assume jostling and crowds burn more calories :)

I assume extended families are still quite common - is there no one else available to care for the child?

I cant comment about #5. Thanks for answering my questions tho!
