How long does the whole process of importing take. Can everything be done including car registration in a week's time?
The entire process of importing will be a pain - more than the trouble of not having a car in the winter.
Especially that your car is old, I agree with Maharaj - sell it off in the US and then come to Canada. After importing, making it as per the so called Canadian Standards (which is a requirement for getting the car imported/registered) will be a big PAIN and EXPENSIVE! Not worth for a 10 year old US car.

RIV process - appr $250 - might include cost of very minor "modifications"
Registration - $100
If modifications are needed for admissibility - cost depends on how major it is.
Time - Few hours at Cdn tire for the RIV process
Registration - Similar experience as that of at the DMV - few hours
Modifications - depends
A 10 year old car has more risks than a new one as far as admissibility and modification requirements go.
The numbers are ballpark figures.

I imported a Nissan Sentra 2004 two years back. It was a painless procedure, however if for some reason the car fails inspection (you have to do the mandatory modifications though), you will keep shelling out the inspection cost, each time ($25 i guess). Without the inspection guy (I did it at Can tire) stamping the paper, you cannot proceed and you have 45 days to get it done. I had a guy during the inspection and his car also older kept failing the inspection because of a faulty door handle!!! So you never know what could be the stumbling block.....
FYI, I sold my Sentra recently and to my surprise I got a lower price (compared to a similarly type) , since it was imported from US and thus had the Canadian requirements "added" and not built into it. I don't agree to this logic, but its one of the reason people/dealers find to drive your car price down...
Sorry, couldn't respond earlier but looks like Dimple 2001 has repsonded pretty much accurate.
