Not everybody who drinks wine/beer/spirits (including me) has an addiction problem. Addiction has something more to do than just alcohol. You do not develop withdrawal symptoms if you do not drink next day. That is not the case with cannabis and other substances

I do not get how issue of "shuddh" Gujarati” came up or how you concluded that I have a typical right-wing mindset.

It should be obvious to any one that a person born and raised in Gujarat would have better understanding of the issue. Well, you one of those "shuddh" Gujarati” who support lifting the ban while I have a different take on this issue. If the prohibition was perceived to be a wrong policy, it would have been scrapped long time back. The fact that no political party has guts to raise the issue is proof enough that the policy has served well. All that I want to say is that certainly “No alcohol” has been good for Gujarat.

As regards “a typical right-wing mindset” I guess you are right. Though I do not believe I have “a typical right-wing mindset”, many accuse me for that especially when I tell my CD friends that I believe that “Conservative under Harper” are far better than loony Liberals! However, my impression is that a “ typical right-wing mindset” Gujarati is for scrapping the prohibition in Gujarat. May be I am wrong because it is universal conviction of media that a typical leftist is a intellectual stalwart and since you are not a typical right-wing mindset person, by default you must be a towering intellectual giant which I am not.

Yes. I have a better understanding of this issue and hence I raised the issue of being a Gujarati

When I say right wing fundamentalist mindset, I mention the fact that you just tend to argue without any logic. You have a very inflammatory language - like "just because I said so" or just because "somebody said so". Try to take another person's perspective into consideration. And try to consider the origin of prohibition policy in Gujarat, thoughts of Gandhiji - and its relevance in modern day India.

And I am a conservative supporter too. Just because I try to think in a different way does not make me a leftist liberal.

Prohibition/Vegetarianism is an effect of Jainism on Gujaratis. One discussion about lifting of prohibition, and all those so called leaders from various factions of society will jump in about their feelings being hurt. As mentioned humorously by late author Chunilal Madiya, Gujarat government forced lions/tigers to eat grass during "Paryushan".

Empirical evidence amply speaks for that.

Prove it

Jainism is not only in Gujarat but also in Rajsthan, may be more conservative there. So its not jainism for sure. Also Gandhi's vision was very true about prohibition. What has changed in modern world in that regard? Nothing much. Gandhi and his thoughts are still relevant in present situation. Time has not yet come of he becomes tasweer on sarkari diwal.

Also women in Gujarat are much safer during late night because of this. You dont come across drunk people that easily. And dont compare it to Canada or any western country. Law implementation is not same in Gujarat and Canada. Also not everyone turns into keshto, but only one is danger enough to society.

Emprical evidence?

I have stayed in Maharashtra and Gujarat. Ill effects of non-prohibition policy are too obvious comparing law and order situation in these states. Now I am not an expert in social sciences and nor are you. One has have appreciation and perceptions of ill effects of consuming liquor.

If majority of people think that prohibition is not good, it would have been scrapped in Gujarat long back. I guess this is proof enough.

By the way if you are really interested following link will be interesting.

Interestingly, it concludes that prohibition policy is not that effective. At the same time it lists dangers of liquor consumption.

Just a personal note that I do drink occassionally .

Article Excerpt
Introduction

Approximately 2 billion people worldwide consume alcohol, an estimated 76 million of whom have been diagnosed with alcohol use disorders (1), Alcohol consumption is estimated to cause 1.8 million deaths per year (3.2% of all deaths) and to be responsible for 4,0% of the disability-adjusted life years lost per year worldwide (1, 2). Additionally, it is estimated that 20-30% of all motor vehicle accidents, homicides and intentional injuries are alcohol-related (3, 4). Studies have also found that high alcohol intake increases blood pressure (5, 6), and elevates the risk of stroke (7-10) and liver cirrhosis (11, 12).
