Hi All,

I am presently in India and I hope to get my PR in next 6 months, so I will be coming to Canada next year.

I have done B.Tech in Computer Systems from OUBC (Vancouver, Canada) here in India itself through Aptech Computer Education. So, basically I have good foundation in computer science. I have 8 years of experience in Tech. Support (80% Desktop and 20% Server Side).

Now I am bogged down with this career and cannot take it any more. Following are some of the reasons that I feel unsatisfied with my career.

1. I do not want deal with all this hardware stuff. Upgrading computers, changing memory, hard drives etc.
2. I do not want to deal with so many people who keep coming on to me just to get their issues resolved. Say there are 1000 employees in the company and I deal with 20 to 25 people daily from different departments and everybody seems to be pushing me to do quickly or some other thing.
3. The pay is low in this field as compared to other IT sectors.
4. One has to go early at times and even on weekends and late stays. That is I do not want to work 24 x 7.

I read some posts and found that one' s experience and other qualifications are not considered much. So, **please advise me some field from IT (Information Technology)** itself that I can advance in before coming to canada that can offer me *decent pay and stable career in long term*.

I am ready to do the following:

1. Hardwork to upgrade my skills.
2. Invest my money, time and effort for upgrading / certifying skills.
3. Willing to leave leisure activities of weekends, so that I can devote that time to study and practice.

My plan is that I should upgrade my skills and get certification (just to prove that I have skills and I am certified) here in India and then I can move to Canada.

Please advise me about the the field in IT that can offer me *good salary and stable career in long term*. I would also appreciate any other suggestions from you people as you have better understanding of the canada.

Investigate the 'SAP Basis' area - it is sort of system admin and configuration. Pay is handsome.

Thanks for the info. I searched the payscale and they say that it is $17 per hour with 1 to 4 years of experience.

How's is the demand of "SAP Basis" in canada. It's actually a very costly course if you go for certification approx: 2,50,000 rupees (CAD $5600).

If possible, can you add some more info on it.

Don't understand from where you get $17 per hour for SAP Basis. My company hired/contracted few SAP professionals last month - here are their rates:

FICO with 5 yrs experience - $ 95 per hour.
SD with 4 yrs experience - $ 80 per hour.
Basis with 5 yrs experience - $ 45 per hour.
BW with 3 yrs experience - $ 110 per hour.

All have at least 2/3 implementations experience.

It seems that the salary data on http://www.payscale.com" rel="nofollow">LINK is old. It's good to know the figures directly from the industry.

I do not want to go for "Basis" as it is same as system administration (the field I am currently in) and I want to get out of that.

If you are in SAP can you please let me know that If I need to learn any thing before going into SAP BW. Please let me know how can I make a career in SAP BW. The salary seems whopping.

Assuming 40 hours per week, the pay rate seems quite good.

40 * $110 * 52 weeks = CAD $228800

I know that it would be pretty tough and lot of hardwork and sacrifices will be required to achieve that. I will put in my best efforts and even If I reach at 50% of the above, I would be contented.

I have downloaded one SAP ABAP book (1540 pages) and I have started reading that.

SAP ABAP has no relation with SAP BW. ABAP is a programming language of SAP (similar to java, C++, VB) , which is used in around 95% of SAP programs. It is true that all modules of SAP are written in ABAP but there is very limited scope in ABAP unless you work for SAP lab or any SAP partner location. In real world, most of ABAPers do custom real time reporting with R/3 stuff most of their time.

The SAP BW is a sort of Data warehousing based on Business Intelligence. You should have in depth knowledge of relational databases and clear understanding of data warehousing concepts.

Around 9 years back, when I arrived in Canada and decided to change my career, I picked programming. After few years, I got my ABAP certification from SAP Academy (from India - I went there for training) but in real life, got SD project. My next goal is also BW :-).
