Check it out before u fly. Avoid geting bad seats. U can tell the airline which seat u want by going thru the site. Has info on different airlines and planes.
FYI, The airline allots the seats based on the fares you pay. The people who pay less fare go right at the back of the plane. Frequent flyers or with status get the seats behind business class irrespective of the fare.
Airline agent generally will give you good seat when you request only when the flights are not full.

If you book ticket online .... most of the airline have the option of choosing your seats while you book .... they show a plan of the aeroplane inside & show which seats are available .....

Lana2005 is sort of correct. Frequent flyers with certain status and flyers who paid business fare do get access to those so called "premium" seats that other passengers initially don't.
However, that does not mean all other passengers get to go to the end of the plane. Premium seats are usually few front row seats, all exit row seats and certain aisle seats. So other passengers still can choose front row window and center seats.
Good thing about frequent flyer membership is that you get same privileges on all partner airlines. For ex, Air Canada membership and frequent flyer status will entail equal benefits on all star alliance member airlines (Lufthansa, Thai, United, Singapore, etc, etc)

One can change or request for a change in seats at check-in too. If they can they normally accomodate your request.

I have got tickets via bidding i.e. paid hundreds less than regular fare customers and still got better seats.
The fare also depends on a whole range of other factors, such as when you booked, how you booked, the type of ticket (i.e. flexibility), etc.
Seating arrangement is probably the last factor (if at all).
However, you are correct that rewards holders and business class passengers can usually get a better deal during check-in time.
For example, if they had a seat already assigned and then requested at check in time to change it to something more comfortable, they will get preference over a casual traveler, even if this "casual" traveler paid more for his ticket.
