well it could also depend on the kind of frequent flyer card you hold - thereby entitling you to certain "fringe benefits".. but then again, regarding upgradation and to a certain extent seating .. its all at the descretion of the check-in agent at the time ...

Yep, I've got elite status on Northwest and I almost always fly first class (upgraded at the time of check in or boarding) on domestic within US and to Mexico.

What are the minimum requirements to get Elite status on Northwest?
Can some one tell me ?
In the near future, I would like to get an Elite status from Northwest.
Thanks in advance.

On Northwest...

25000 miles for Silver Elite
50000 miles for Gold elite
75000 miles for Platinum Elite

Also, you can get elite status by flying x number of segments (flights) if your flying habits are all short distances.

Elite miles (miles counted towards elite status) are earned only by flying NW. All other miles earned by flying partner airlines count towards ...well...just miles. Caveat....as you become elite, a percentage of miles earned through partner airlines count towards elite miles.

Skyteam partners are NW, Continental, Delta, Czech Airways, AeroMexico, etc, etc. Jet airways is part of Skyteam, although not one of the core members (whatever that means)

1. Frequent flyer - atleast
2. Paying customer - most important.
3. Clock some minimum miles for travel by air, with the same airline.

Northwest, Continental and Delta i.e. Skyteam needs only 75000 for platinum elite. That is very good. Air Canada needs 100k and the partners are not that many only United and US. United does not many flights in the North-east so choice with Air canada is very limited.

I chose Air Canada because they were flying to Delhi and Toronto-Delhi tkt was only 70,000 points. Now they have cancelled the flight so you need 130 k points to fly to India.

How is the customer service for Skyteam? Do you have a live agent for all inquiries or is totally impersonal on e-mails?
