Resources, Chinese market sustain funds during troubled third quarter
by Christian Charest / Philip Lee | 2 Oct 07
U.S. stocks improve in September, but loonie's surge negates most gains.
The third quarter of 2007 was a tumultuous one for holders of practically all types of mutual funds, but 20 of the 42 Morningstar Canada Fund Indices managed to produce positive returns for the three-month period ended Sept. 30. The best performer among all fund indices was the Morningstar Asia Pacific ex-Japan Equity Fund Index with a 7.3% gain, according to preliminary performance data released today by Morningstar Canada.
With the exception of Japan, Asian markets continued to produce strong returns last quarter. In particular, China's phenomenal run showed no sign of slowing down, with the Shanghai Composite Index and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index surging by 45.3% and 24.7%, respectively.
In mid-July, the National Bureau of Statistics in Beijing announced that China's second-quarter GDP came in at an annualized growth rate of 11.9% after a blistering 11.1% during the first quarter. This provided investors, already optimistic about the Chinese economy, with a reason to continue bidding up China-related stocks. Despite a sharp correction in the middle of August and the Chinese central bank's 27-basis-point hike in borrowing rates to curb inflation--its fifth rate increase this year--these stocks continued their meteoric rise.

DJ China Shares End Up; Shanghai At Record On Banks, Metal Cos
(DowJonesNewswires, pr/10.10.2007, godz. 11:00)
SHANGHAI (Dow Jones)--Bargain hunting in metals firms and gains in banks pushed the benchmark Shanghai index to a record closing level Wednesday, though profit-taking weighed on the smaller Shenzhen bourse.
The Shanghai Composite Index, which tracks both A and B shares, ended up 1% at 5771.46, off an intraday record of 5860.86. The Shenzhen Composite Index fell 0.5% to 1543.79.
The Shanghai Index is poised to test psychological resistance of 6000 later this week, traders said.

HK at 28569!
Now here's the deal on HK. They want it to go up to say 28900+ and then the following day push it up 1000+ points (the precedent has already been set recently a couple of times) so that it cracks both 29000 and 30000 levels in one fell swoop!
I am told by HK people that no stock exchange has done this before, however watchers of the Brazil stock exchange say Brazil witnessed it not too long ago.
Brazil currently is also at an all time high of 63,548.39
Gonna have to do some research on this
Dow hit an all time high yesterday climbing minutes after the minutes(dig that) of the Sep meeting came out at 1.30, 2 pm.
Dow futures down today.
TSX has now got to play catch up. Hit Rubin's 15,000!
Diwali rally? Santa Claus rally?
Ok so I have posted 100 posts(this is no 101) and there are 2867 views.
I wish to thank all who read my posts and also all who call and email me to encourage me to "keep up the good work". Some wonder as to how I can be so diligent and persistent and that most would have given up by now.
The reason is simple, I watch the stock markets every day so why not give a synopsis? That way I can refer to my own notes as to what happened a particular day in the past.
As for instance when HK jumped 1200 points! It's recorded here. I can use this info in my presentations etc.
There you go, the reasons aren't entirely altruistic and devoid of selfish motives- that's to show I am human.
Again thanks to all. Even my advisor colleagues who actually read my posts to
check out what's happening in Chindia, as they find them peppered with a l'il humour and kinda perks up their day.
