"Once upon a time in a village a man appeared who announced to the
villagers that he would buy monkeys for Rs. 10 each. The villagers seeing
that there were many monkeys went out in the forest and started catching
them. The man bought thousands at 10 and as the supply started to diminish
and the villagers started to stop their efforts, he announced that now he
would buy at 15 rupees.

This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys
again. Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going
back to their farms. The offer rate increased to 20 rupees and, in fact,
the supply of monkeys became so low that it was an effort to even see a
monkey let alone catch it.

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at 60 rupees each! However, as he had to go to the city on some business, he deputed his assistant to buy them on his behalf.

In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers. "Look at all
these monkeys in the big cage that the man has collected, I will sell them
to you at 40 rupees each and when the man comes back you can sell it to him
for 50 rupees each." The villagers queued up with all their savings to buy
the monkeys.

After that no body could locate the man and that assistant, but only monkeys and monkeys and monkeys..... "

What a true reflection of the stock market. Look at all the majors like Enron, Nortel of USA or Mafatlal group or RPG group today in India.

I still remember the joke around Dalal Street, where the paan wallah who did not have any clue on the stock market, but just overheard the words from discussion of his clients, bought stocks and did better than some MF managers.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

The story about the monkeys is boiler room material, which still today exists.

I have been an investor in the share markets since the early 80s in North America and in India since early 1990's and can't say I regret it. There have been wild rides , but one just has to ride the vicissitudes of the market and pump in more money when the market goes down.

For every Nortel and Enron, there is an Infosys and Zee plus ten more. The good outweighs the bad in the stock market at least since the 80s

Good stuff.

Real estate has been good too.

Yeah but the story about the monkeys is a good laugh:)

I have seen ( as many ) for every one gainer there was 10000 or more loosers .

When there is a constant amount of money ( monkeys), some one has to loose to make others gain.

In India ,stock market goes up when FII s come in and goes down when literally the villagers come in, the time for FIIs exit.
