My take on this
Do what you need to do to make your life better even if involves taking some tough decisions . Once you and your wife agree to it , just do it. There will be people who like your decision and there will be who oppose it But do u care . You will have more opposition if you take a decision that against the normal Indian culture but would it stop you from taking it .
If I was in your position and I took this decision and my wife agreed that this was the right thing to do , I would not ask other people 's stamp of approval .
Take a decision and stand by it and own it . Yo have to live by the results of the decsion you take and not care what people have to say. After all if you are broke these people will not come and help you financially .

I agree...this time for real
.I would also add, dont let your guilt destroy the sacrifice you are currently making. Know that things will workout in the end and aim for it. I have close relatives who made such sacrifices(though I personally cannot) and I see no adverse effects on their kids.
There is only one person who is meant to live your life and thats the person you are truly answerable to.
So you do it your way!

Right now, my wife works more hours than me as we have adjusted our times so that we do not have to keep my son in day-care (monthly expense for day care would be around $550). Her per-hour wage is less than mine but take-home pay per pay-slip is more since she works more hours.
This is the first time she has started working after our marriage so I am enjoying it.
