I have a very very slim chance of moving to Houston for a new job. For people who have lived there or know of the place well, how is Houston as a city?
- Indian stuff? Population, temples, good Indian restaurants .. like Mississauga or worse?
- General safety
- Children schools and safety
- Cost of living
- Traffic?
- Is Houston a mistake compare to living in GTA?
I do not have any first hand experience however I have a friend who lived in Canada for over 6 years and moved to Houston. No comparison according to him. It is the third or fourth largest metropolis in US, weather is better ( considering you do not like the winters here ), houses are way way cheaper and overall the cost of living in US is much lesser with the benefit of higher pay and lower taxes. He is very happy with his move. Any urban area in NA would have its own fair share if crime and other problems. You can always choose to live in a better off area.
Hope this helps.

Thanks iceberg.
My wife lived completed her undergrad from University of Houston and lived there for almost 8 years. She still raves about the lifestyle. I have a few other friends who also reside there.
Houston has a large desi population, but they are overall well-off compared to the average desi population in Canada. The reason being they are in the U.S either on H1Bs or are Green Card Holders/ Citizens, so have some certainty on the job front, unlike Canada where people migrate and then try to find a job.
Desi restaurants are plenty, but not to the extent that you would see in Mississauaga or Brampton, as there is no concentration of desis/ethnic enclaves in one location as you see in the GTA.
Cost of living in Texas is very low due to no state tax (similar to our PST). Land is very cheap and housing prices are low.A large 4 bedroom house will be around the 250K mark, so you can say that prices are almost half than that of the GTA. The flipside is that appreciation in prices is also not that much.
If you have an opportunity in Houston which is better than your situation in Canada, you should take it (no questions asked )

It is not similar to PST - which is a Provincial SALES tax in Canada. In Texas, there is a sales tax But no State Income Tax (which is similar to having no provincial Income Tax in Canada).
