Hi all,
I found this forum via google. My husband and I are considering moving to Canada.... We are still making a decision....I am listing some questions here, can I please ask for help in answering them ? Thank you!

To give you a background. We are currently in London. We qualify for a UK PR in 2 yrs time. The reason we are looking at moving is the current state of economy here and ridiculous cost of housing.

We are senior business analysts in the finance -IT with 10 yrs of work experience. I've been a contractor and my husband is a permanent employee of a major asset mgmt firm. We have a 4yr old child who just started school

1. Where to live? Considering our professional and personal background, we are looking at living near a major city, with good job market for Finance-IT. We also need to be around good schools.

2. What is the cost of living like in major cities and suburbs? We want to rent a 2 bed apartment within 30mins commute to work and later buy a house after a year...We'd like to live in quiet safe areas with good schools.....

3. Primary/secondary school: is education free in Canada? How are state schools? How is childcare like? (managing before/after school)?

4. Any comparison to London will be immensely helpful

5. My husband can perhaps ask to relocate through his current employer... Is this advisable over the skilled immigrant route? We won't be moving until 2014 anyway...

6. Does Canada have contract jobs? Or is this rare?

If you read this far, thank you for your time!

Before you proceeed any further, visit www.cic.gc.ca and familiarize with the immigration process. Among the first steps is to identify whether or not your profession is in the occupation list that CIC is currently accepting. If the answer is no, you may have to consider your husband's employer transfering you to Canada and maybe investigate PR options from that point forward.

Best wishes.

perfect answer by dimple, I can only reiterate adding my viewpoint,
Pls consider first whether the immigration is possible with your or husband's skill ?

my suggestion would be to complete the PR in UK, and keep a tab on ever changing immigration rules of Canada for any future movement.
There is no comparison of UK vs Canada when it comes to personal perspective and needs. One may like UK other will say Canada. I personally see Canada-Toronto better than London. I have my reasons such as wet whether, dry attitude, british accent, slow govt. services and cogestion in London, though suberbs are same as Toronto subs ( i have seen Milton, near London).

Btw economy is same here and job finding will be challenge. That itself indicates move with your Job if possible , rest will fall in place.

I have my sis and sil both in UK and we compare it all the time and based on all our dicussions / conversations I wud say canada is a better place : multicultural, lesser racism, more activities, facilities offered by govmt, less expensive, bigger houses etc.

Thank you everyone...please keep the replies coming in...

Dimple and Sanhugo....we fit into one of the categories (oversubscribed) on the occupation list...

The reason I am asking these questions is to make a informed decision whether to start working towards moving to Canada or not. My husband will ask at his workplace only after we firmly decide to move.

I don't want to be in a situation where I spend a lot of time and money only to realize we are better off in uk...

We are at a point in our lives where we want to settle down somewhere, buy a house and call a place a home. We are happy in London in some ways but there are something's that we really can't compromise on. Inputs from opinions will help us make an informed decision....

Personally living in both countries, I prefer UK over here in Canada, especially when you are in London.
Public transport is mess here compare to London. Car purchase, insurance, gas etc cost much higher than London.
Some of daily grocery items are rare to find in supermarket here, when you are so customized to live with those items, you will frustrate with choices and price here in superstore.
I have not find any good Indian restaurents here in Toronto which can be comparable to few on Ealing road and wembley.
And above all, UK PR is tough to get compare to Canadian PR. Looking to your present circumstances, I would advice to stick there until PR. You will get into Canada any day, either on PR or Work permit.
And try to browse forum britishexpats and their canada section.
