i have a question,...
what is the meaning of 'desi' ?
In Sanskrit it means one from our land, i.e. India. Loosely translated desi means native of, but for us it holds a deeper meaning: roots, pride, culture.
Practically the term desi now refers to peoples of South Asian descent— combining Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis etc. into one big group. This term is now widely used by almost all South Asians- a desi is a displaced South Asian. Perhaps this started just because there wasnt another word for Indians who grew up in America since the term American-Indian denoted a totally different group of people (who incidently had nothing to do with India).
BTW, are you a desi?
