Desi GTA vs others?
When I came to Canada some 10yrs back there were hardly any *good* desi restaurants here.
Now in GTA the amount of "desi-ness" is amazing. We have many desi restaurants (many of which are quite good), we have Hindi movies playing in main-stream halls, we have lots of Desi shows and also desi programs on TV. We have like 5 desi radio stations (though crap) and lots of desi grocery stores. Plus all the temples, desi papers etc. Not to forget Hockey in Punjabi .
I was just wondering if there is any place in the USA that is comparable in terms of the desi-ness factor to the GTA. I know Silicon valley area would be comparable or better, but apart from that??

It is not the desi - ness as you put it, but the quality of the Desis.
The following may be a sweeping statement but based on the immigration policy of USA versus Canada tends to be true.
USA primarily admits people based on Skilled Class. The family immigration is there but a slow process and much less in quantity.
Canada was primarily an open immigration country(anybody could immigrate)but since last 8 years has stressed more on Skilled Class.
In USA you'll typically bump into or meet a highly educated/sophisticated Desi meaning First Class or Executive Class,
While in Canada you'll typically bump into Desis of Economy Class(or as Shashi Tharoor puts it CATTLE CLASS).
It is not quantity but the quality of the desi who decide the Desiness of the place.

I haven't been to GTA yet, so can't compare apples to apples but I have personally known following few places in US with good desi presence:
Edison/Piscataway, NJ. Oak Tree is my favorite place for desi restaurants.
Devon street, Chicago
Irvine, California
Houston, Texas
Tampa, Florida.
I am sure there are lot more that I am yet to explore.

I still think have we have a good desi environment in GTA. Vandemataram I agree with you but I think it does not matter with what I am trying to get at.

On the contrary , the converse is true --- Desi ness is decided by quantity more than quality ... Brampton vs London .. which do you consider more desi ??

I have been in the Gulf for like 9 yrs and despite the fact that 90% of the Indian expats there are low earners ...... its much more "desi" than even here as you find Indians all over .... restraunts , tea stalls , taxi drivers ... you name it .

Vandematram....very true.
I feel the same way after living long time in both the countries. USA Desi are richer/highly educated than Canadian Desi, even their next generation is doing very good. There is lot of desi kids in spell bee/science competition and ivy schools in USA. Here in western Canada, desi kids are not even close.
