One of my distant relatives are moving to USA on a green card sponsored by their daughter who is living in Silicon Valley which doesn't really get as cold as this.

While living in USA, I've witnessed some stories about the healthcare plight of retirement people. I often thought they didn't back it up with require preparation.

I am wondering how this family is going to fair out given the regular medical assistance they had been getting including a hip surgery, heart related treatment, drug assistance. I guess some of the Govt benefits might even stop. I don't want to be too upfront at the same time I have a feeling the same might happened to me as my girl is a US citizen, though a teen, I see the interest in exploring her career there.

Since the relatives are moving on GC, choices for health care coverage:

1. Through employer.
2. Through Obamacare if not covered via employer or coverage is inadequate
3. Medicare (above a certain age. Not sure if there are other eligibility criteria)

What the coverage entails depends on a number of choices, which is too vast to write here.

There are plenty of + and - in the US healthcare. As always, people who gripe about everything will gripe about this one as well. One has to be a realist and weigh in the available facilities with the needs of the individual.

The real challenge is for short term visitors who will not be covered by the US health system and have to have proper coverage before traveling.

Thanks. The obamacare is something that slipped out of my mind completely.
There are millions of seniors living comfortably in USA. Our relatives are reasonably well off, so I guess it wouldn't be too taxing.

In a year from now, I am going to start exploring a move there considering the circumstances permit. I will collect some information and start a separate discussion about it.

<EOD on this as this is indeed a tangent>. :) :)
