Hi,
From people, I hear, that the canadian economy is down, and there are very few jobs these days. Many people also advocate (thru their experience) that the time 1997-2000 was rich in jobs. And some also dare to say that the coming few years the canadian economy is gonna pick up and job situation will be better.
Are we on the lower peak of the economic cycle or already moving up? (or are we already at the top!!; that gives me a fright!!)
I would like to invite people shedding their opinion on this issue.
thanks

Well Canadian economy may go up and down but since last 7 years I have not seen much change in job market except IT and Labor (or odd) jobs.
What I think Labour jobs are seasonal and go up and down with US economy ( not Canadian) and IT jobs are in bad shape globally.
Thanks and regards.

thanks biomed for your input. If things are like this, I feel most of the desis will come in with high hopes, and leave tired, probably after getting a passport, or even b4 that.

Though IT jobs are hit globally ,there is a great demand for IT Engineers in India.
As for other jobs it depends on the individual sector within the economy some sectors are down whereas other sectors could be doing quite well.
Canadian newspapers could be a good source of finding out.

To a great extent, it does not matter how the Canadian economy is doing, the one thing to remember is that it is not like the States. The Canadian economy is not dynamic and Canadian companies are generally risk-averse. So it is possible that you may be hit hard in bad times (recession) but things don't look very bright (job-wise) even when the economy is picking up. U.S. companies operate on a massive scale and are ready to take risks even in hiring practices. This is one of the manyreasons that immigrants find it easier to land up a job south of the border as compared to here. U.S. companies will hire if you don't have North American experience. they are ready to take a chance on you.
This is in stark contrast to the Canadian environment where employers are risk-averse and prefer to go with the known. The market being small means that every job posting results in hundreds of qualified job-seekers applying for a position.
Having said that, there are certain sectors that are growing or facing a shortage of skilled employees; for example healthcare, tool & die technicians, machinists etc. However, this does not mean that you will not face the "Canadian Experience" dilemma. For many immigrants this has become a Catch-22 situation.
However, I believe that as a group we can help our own community. Those who have been here for a long time and have gone through the hoops can offer valuable guidance/contacts to fellow newcomers or those who haven't been able to still find a position that matches their skill set and experience. What I am suggesting is more of a mentor relationship; or may be even a group of mentors, each specialising in a particular field.
Sorry for the long message.. but I was feeling lazy to post 2 separate messages
