Of course this bill isn't going to solve all problems or end corruption, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure that out. Let me save you another suspense. Anna Hazare isn't perfect and implementing ALL his views without debate won't solve all of India's problem.

This is however a step in the right direction. If nothing at all, you have to give this guy credit for galvanizing effort in this direction, something no one has been able to do in this way in decades. If everybody does their job and democracy works as expected, the debate will yield a compromise solution that still won't be perfect, but will be much better than the void that exists currently.

There are couple of points I would like to make

Before Anna, Baba Ramdev held a huge rally in Delhi against corruption. However, due to English media complicity, it was not reported properly.

Then Narendra Modi has achieved much success in fighting corruption with the same bureaucracy and same laws.

I believe that Anna has been used by "Sickular" forces here and ELM has wholeheartedly supported.

If Jan Lokpal bill is passed, the first person they would fix would be Narendra Modi and not Manmohan or Sonia.

So long as other pillars of judiciary do not work without fear or favor (Judiciary, Press and Police) the problem would not be solved.

Next is electoral reforms. So long India has first past the post sytem, vote buying by Karuna, Sonia, Pawar and Mayavati would bring back corrupt Governments to power.

It is a herculean task indeed.

Armchair critics? Here, everyone is arm-chaired - whether critic or else. Moveover, if the CanadianDesi Charcha section is for charcha then the posters will definitely and only 'ruriously' type away at their keyboards. Any other choice do you provide at Charcha, i.e. recorded messages, live discussion, etc.? If not then my dear friend you will always have two sided discussions, criticism and favouritism.

In each of the criticism posts in this very thread, enough alternatives were provided by each of the critics. It's a discussion on internet for God's sake, not a Parliament.

Regarding Anna, yes I agree that he did garner a lot of support from an 'aam aadmi'(common man) on the street, including me of-course. However, if all this energy, euphoria, revolution is directed towards bringing in Lokpal and not cleaning the whole machinery, then in my opinion it's a futile exercise. Again, you can't delegate endless powers to the Lokpal while not ensuring that the office of Lokpal will be curruption free as well. Moreover, how can you be so sure that India will not turn into a Neo-fascism state, where if unfortunately an authoritarian Lokpal takes over the office will ruin whatever is left of it. Does this bill guarantee that? Your guess is as good as mine.

Solution? Electoral reforms to oversee the candidates and Judicial reforms to make sure the guilty doesn't go scott free. It's these offices that should be 'free of influence'. We do not need another office (Lokpal) to clean this mess and thus, embodied into another mess.

I fail to understand what alternative people want. Anna and his goons are nothing but manipulators. They will not see big picture but cry about curruption bla bla. India is progressing at 8-9%. What more you want?
Can anna make one child policy. NO. India will come out of poverty only by growth with hign inflation. Thats it. It may take 10-15 years.
beacause india is progressing so we have high value scam. If no money then no scam.
Go and try buy any land or house in india in city. I am sure 90% desi NRIs are priced out. Money & oppurtunity is in air in india right now. Enjoy the progress.

I was referring to the guys who wrote the newspaper articles. Thanks for proving my point anyways and oh yeah, great job finding and highlighting that typo. I'll refrain from doing the same on your post.

CDs can discuss all they want, that is the point of the forum. It has been happening since 2002 and I'm glad you agree with it.

Holy Craparoni!!! Why didn't someone think of this before? :D What's next? Building a space shuttle to go to Mars next year by thinking positive and doing the right thing?

Really people get what they deserve!:) Just a couple of weeks ago, people from all the corners of the society were praising and supporting Annaji. What he did was 97 hours without eating a grain and what he got back in return. He started getting stones of bitterness from all the corners of the society including Diggi, Advani, Tagore and many so called… experts. People even questioned about the source of money he got to remain empty stomach for 97 hrs. At least people should look at the credentials and achievement this man have had in past.
Annaji you are very happy in a one unfurnished room dwelling and don’t waste your energy for the people who really deserve (and some are even delighted) to be exploited by corrupt, materialistic, opportunist and … goons.

I fully support Anna Hazare. Enough for me that all politicians are trying to stop lokpal bill so it must be good.

We need to start somewhere and it's a good start. These politicians will go to any length to dis-credit Anna and confuse people. Hope Anna succeed and it will sure motivate people and we may have more Anna in future.
