Hi,

My wife recently got laid off from her temp position, her EI will most probably get approved.

1> Can anyone share the process for getting Funds from EI for Training.

2> How long should we wait before applying for the same

3> How much is the max amount we can get (I have heard contradicting figures 7500 and 25 thousand)

4> How to get the max amount

Thanks
Navin

Hello,
Under the second skills program of Ontario, you are allowed for a max. payout of $ 28,000 which includes fees for Training, Transportation and living allowance.
Most IT related training centres offer $ 13,000 for fees from EI.
The onus is on you (the applicant) to find a institute which can get the max. money from the EI case worker.
also, most people have told me that the better relationship that you have with the EI case worker (crying in front of them, threatening to leave the country, treating them respectfully, never raising their voice in front of them etc..) will ensure max. payout.
Hope this helps

How do you build a (better) relationship with a stranger by crying in front of them? I think we could do a better job at providing guidance in this forum ;)

TK is not wrong in a Way..

U have to impress them with strong desire - They need to know that u r really serious to do the course to improve your skill. - this is imp.

for financial support - u need explain them your financial situation , u can lie here a bit - saw them some extra expenses

everything has to be done in nice way - that's how u impress them and get bit more money -

its all number games , they will evolute how much u will need to support your self and your family -

they have certain budget so if u prove them good they dont mind increase monthly budget to their limits.

u can add little more towards all expenses - Rent - they might ask lease or mortgage documents
but for FOOD, Cloths, etc.. - u can add extra Dollar then regular

Trust me on this one. Unless you cry and push them, the EI case workers will never listen to your case. You should not shout at them but rather make the case worker feel sorry for you.
I know of a case in which a spouse of a PR was laid off and the case worker (EI) plainly said that if you are a professional you are not eligible for any further skill training but rather that she should look for a job while being on EI. She listened to the caseworkers advise and started looking for a job which she got after 4 months.
On the other hand, all training institutes know very well as to how to equip you to get money for their training from the EI case workers. One such institute offered me a course of EI for $ 13,000 (regular fees if I pay my own money is $ 8500). All these institutes have previous experience with case workers and I think that the set fee is $ 13,000 that can be got max. for these kind of courses. I was assured that once I get the $ 13,000 K from the EI case worker, I can mix and match any course that I wanted to do as per my own whim.
So what I would advise the OP is to attend info. sessions of all famous institues offering courses that the OP's wife would like to study (incl. all institutes, colleges etc...). all hold closed door sessions for EI candidates. They will inform you as to how much max. they can get from the EI case worker and then you decide accordingly.

Hope this helps.

TK has very rightly pointed out. When direct fee (if you join the institute on your own) is lower, it becomes higher in EI case; like dental doctor fee for the same services is higher depending on type of insurance one have. Well, after crying nicely in front of case worker, remind the training institute(if they forget to mention) about some incentive (like laptop or cash to buy it) from the higher amount paid. After all you need a laptop for a nice training. How useful this training would be, in getting a job, is another question.
