I worked on my net yday and closed it.

Later when I started, internet could not be conencted. I called tech and they confirmed there is no issue with my internet but they said it was an issue with my browser.

I am not sure what caused it but what I did in my first session on net was deleted few shortcut icons from start up. Computer was taking long time to start so I thought may be lot of programs start during start up, so let me delete few....I went to start button on bottom left, then programs, then start up and deleted few shortcuts ........can not remember all but Adobe, picture package etc.

Could this be reason ? If so, how to fix it ? If not, what else can be reason and how to fix it ?

Thankyou for your suggestions.

They should be in the Recycle Bin.
Try restoring them and see if that makes a difference.
It seems unlikely that anything in startup shortcuts can prevent you from connecting to the Internet.
In any case, those are simply short cuts to program, not the programs themselves.

Open up the command prompt as follows -
- Start > Run > Type cmd > Press Enter
In the command window, type the following -

ping w w w . y a h o o . c o m (without the spaces)

You should see the Yahoo host name show up, followed by 4 lines starting with Reply from.

If you get this, then Internet connectivity is fine and it could indeed be a problem with your browser.
If you see no Reply lines, then either there is no Internet connectivity or something is wrong with your computer's network card or configuration.

Try typing ipconfig in the command window and see what output you are getting.

Maybe just the network wire is loose or unplugged.

Hope this helps.

Please post the results.

What browser are you using? If the ping works, issue could be related to firewall or any online protection software (ZoneAlarm, Norton online from Rogers etc.).

If Ping does not work and if you still want to varify ...

Go to Command Prompt by "Start" --> "Run" --> Type cmd & Hit "OK"
At Prompt Type ipconfig /all & Hit Enter
Note Down the DNS Servers: x.x.x.x

At Prompt Type nslookup & Hit Enter
You probably will get

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds

(If you don't get this - your connection is fine)

At 'nslookup' prompt type server 4.2.2.2 & Hit Enter
> server 4.2.2.2

If your Internet Connection is alive then you;ll get

Default Server: vnsc-bak.sys.gtei.net
Address: 4.2.2.2

otherwise same error DNS request timed out

I checked and Internet connectivity is fine.

How to resolve other issues ? Browser, firewall, antivirus, etc. ?

Disable anti-virus and firewall.
Try connecting through Yahoo Messenger - if that succeeds, then it's probably your browser.
What are the settings on your browser?
Is it working offline?
Is it configured to use a proxy server that it can't find?
What is the error message you are getting?
