Hi everyone,
Greetings,

Was curious how is the Writing/Corporate Communication (Public Relations) /Copywriting/ Journalism job scenario in and around Toronto.

This includes writing brochures, manuals, user guides, articles, newsletters, speeches, press releases, presentations, scripts for documentaries and corporate films etc.

Are South Asians in this field, I mean those who are recent immigrants (6-12 Mths), and what would be the intial rates (hourly) one could expect.

Are any certifications mandatory as per regulations.

Regards

The prospects are good but it all depends on how confident you are.

With so many years of experience in above field you will definitely find work. To find work you will have start looking for Co-op job in a big PR agency and work for zero salary for 4-5 months. This way you would gain so called Canadian experience. One more thing, you might have to start at an entry level and then move up the corporate ladder.
Second option, you could also start your own corporate PR business once you have worked in the Canadian market. All you would need is 3-4 very well established business houses.

Thanks, Amit for the response.

It is of great help, appreciate that.

Starting from the entry level is no problem. Because I guess what is most required when working is the 'attitude towards work'.

From my personal experience of settling as an entrepreneur in a new country, I can safely say the best is: 1.Consider your work fun (But don't let that translate into professional incompetence). 2.Do it to the best possible standards 3.Enjoy it. 4. Always be ready to learn 5.Whenever doing something, try to innovate and do it better than others. 5. Make and keep friends.

Payment is incidental; the main return from any job is the experience-it is priceless (even if you failed at it-you learnt something). If you let the experience gather in you, and then utilise it along with planning, entrepreneurship and courage it takes you a long way.

Further I can understand what everybody undergoes in Canada after landing. I faced the same after having landed in a new place, with a newly wed wife and 5000 AED in the pocket. I know how it feels to have others peer out of their fancy cars, while you walk as you don’t have one. But to all my brothers and sisters who are in the midst of the slog, I can say-Trust in yourself and fight. If you believe in your dreams, you do succeed. It is just that god tests you before he gives you anything. Ask me.

In a new place, slogging it off, writing for anyone who cared to let me write, at any price, working often 36 hours without sleep. 12 Months later opened my own firm in the Dubai Media City, and had a lot of those guys who had earlier interviewed me for jobs, come to me and ask for jobs.

My summary of the experience: Don’t wait for an opportunity, create one.
Everyone around you is convinced that you will fail; only you should not be. The world is not duty bound to give you success, you have to wrest it from others. And finally don’t give up. When you succeed, be humble about it and help others achieve it.

Regards

Hi Timon,

You are right ,every place is peculiar, with its own dynamics. But i guess trust in friends, hard work, intelligence and faith in god should help.
