Are there any Amateur radio operators (HAM) on CD ?
So what do you actually do in this?
You get to intercept other peoples' coversations...right?
Will this do it?

Well, listening to others conversation/s or communication/s (QSO) is termed as Short Wave Listening (SWL). HAM radio is more into designing/ building/ experimenting with radio equipment and talking to other amateurs with similar interests using different 'modes' of communication, including (but NOT limited to) satellite & digital communications.
Yes, the receiver (RX) depicted in the picture can be used to intercept Shortwave signals but you cannot transmit, though.

I suppose the distance of comunication is limited by the power of the radio.

Your question is valid. I'll take the word intercept in this context as 'meaningful demodulation/ detection or decoding'. It could be telemetry or voice signals.
You can actually TALK to the space shuttle astronauts ! How does that sound ?
