Are the Credit Unions popular in Canada like the US.
For ex. for Desis in US DCU or USA Federal is a very popular Credit Union . Are there asimilar one's in Canada ?

Are there credit unions since the top 5 banks have crappy schemes where we pay xsaction costs for every xsaction done either at ATM, teller, online banking etc. something which we are not used to dealing in U.S?

Credit unions are there but for daily banking they do not have much to offer except higher rates for GIC( fixed deposits).
They have good morgage rates and less paper work ... no hassles

Most credit unions take only local people as members. That is true even in the US. DCU was different in the sense that it was allowing people to nominate it's relatives as members and that became a good hit with desi's. But during the 2001 dotcom meltdown lot of desi's (according to some people) defaulted on loans from DCU so they no longer accept members that easily unless you are an employee of about 40 odd organizations in the US or unless you are a blood relative or unless you memeber of a non-profit organization.

I would advise you to look around in the area where you live / plan to land and once you land you can apply for membership in those credit unions.
