Lets be realistic. Nobody here is immature or naive not to understand the humor elements.
The problem here is we drift from the main issues and start a parallel line of

There should be only one basic guideline. – If you feel the post is not relevant to you DON’T REPLY.

Yeah, right!! Instead of giving all these \"bhashans\" if only you simply said, \"Sorry for the confusion. I meant K/year. Now please get on with it\", some 7 pages of cyber space would have been redeemed.

People know everything, very \"mature\", have \"great\" sense of humour, and totally egoless, yet post confusing messages and to boot it all want to ride roughshod over others. Give us a break.

Edited by Chandresh for heading. the earlier heading was 'Salary'

This is a tough question. I haven't read through other people's replies so some of this information may be repetitive. Anyhow, it all depends on personal choice. Where you live, what transportation means you use, how many kids, how much you eat, what hobbies or luxuries you have or want. Life is about choices.

According to Stats Canada, the average income for a household is around 50,000$. Depending on how you live your life, this is enough money. A couple who both earns around 50,000 for a household income of 100,000 can live very nicely, however what usually happens it that the spending habits increase as well, therefore the affordability of life doesn't necessarily change when you earn more.

Bear in mind, Toronto is dis-proportionally more expensive to live in.

Now that we have established a "baseline" in communication, let us get to the question of decent salary. As many pointed out, it depends on multiple factors. I won't go into Living Style, etc., etc., ad nauseum.

According to Statistics Canada, the average household expenditure across Canada in 2003 was $61,152 per YEAR inclusive of all taxes. In Ontario it is $68,118 whereas in New Foundland and Labrador it was $48,919. You may want to check this out:

http://www40.statcan.ca/l01/cst01/famil16a.htm?sdi=household%20income

More informally, it may work out like this (on a monthly basis):

Rent $1,000 (Atleast 30% more in Toronto)
Food $500
Utilities $200
Telephone $80
Cable $60
Transport $500 (car lease + insurance + gas)
Entertainment $200
Contingency $100
Saving $200
Total $2,840 (monthly)

Yearly: $34,080
Assuming 40% tax bracket, you need to gross $56,800.

You need to factor in clothing, household furniture/furnishings, etc. The above is for a family of two. If you have children, you need to include their activy costs (soccer club, piano lessons, birthday parties, school picnics and so on).

You can put the above in a spreadsheet and do your own sensitivity analysis.

Again, as I have mentioned before, this is a very informal calculation. You need to factor in your life style, number of members in your family, how often you want to go to the great India (assuming you are from there :p ) or your motherland, wherever that is, and so on and so forth.

Best of luck.

whats all this going on here? Is there any decency left here?Or this is a sheer display of frustrations by insulting others. Some members here have more ego then brain, they speak first and and think later i suppose. This is not a site for insulting others in the name of humour. Stick to the point or simply leave the site and let others do the communication .

the lowest salary that is good in canada is $10 an hour for 40 hrs. you will get $1600 and around $1450 after tax.
Assuming that you are just husband and wife is not working or wife has a small child not yet going to school.
Rent - $ 600 (basement)
Bus - $ 150
entertainment - $100
food - $ 150
milk - $50
phone / cable - $100 (max)
emergency- $100
savings per month $200 (rs.6000).

But can you get a good job (not labour or heavy for $10) is the question?
