If you want a Guaranteed Rental, then you may have to book it from the first of Sept and Pay the full shot from that day. So, to avoid losing the initial 20 days, I said Take a Paying Guest Place on a day to day basis and stay there for the first few days. You have ample time after that to get a place of your choice by VISITING each location and then SELECT one to live there for an year or two and you can stretch yourselves there. Then carry on smartly here in Toronto and do your thing. [Please Don´t buy a condo]
FH.
Generally the rentals run from the first to the last of the month and they also call for a lease.

Don't forget to apply for your OHIP card, 1 month from now, so exactly 3 months after you arrive.
Try to get a good family doctor, ASAP , they are hard to find and get, as most don't take or accept new patients, as they have full capacity.
Without OHIP card, you will be wiped out, if you have a medical emergency and don't have private medical insurance

That info was for BG. You have to wait 3 months before you can apply for your OHIP card. BG has already finished 2 months, hence in 1 month she will be eligible for OHIP card.
You have to go to ANY service canada outlet ( tons of them ) to apply for it.
Your first priority should be applying for SIN card after coming here. Usually you will get it 15 days after you apply for the SIN card. But you need a physical address, where they can mail it to you, I don't think they have a pickup facility for that
OHIP card is the health card and will have a Photo on it. SIN card aka Social Insurance Number won't have any photo on it, just the SIN number.

Your situation is exactly like BangaloreGirl, only difference is she arrived 2 months before in July.
Just follow her footsteps regarding, what she did right from landing at the airport and you should be fine. Which Motel they stayed in ? How they got their first apartment ? What was asked of them, when renting the apartment ?
She is also in IT just like your husband, she also came at almost the same time as you, she also works in Toronto downtown, where your husband will be working, when he arrives.
