Please Help: Im In Deep Deep Shit For Indian Passport

Hello Guys,
Please help me because I dont know what should I do?
I immigrated to Canada some time ago and became a Canadian citizen in 2009. A friend of mine was getting married in India so I finally decided to take some time off to visit. Since I acquired Canadian Passport I was told by the travel agent to go on my Canadian Passport and hence I applied for Indian visa with no problems and no questions about my old Indian passport.
Anyways while in India, I renewed my old Indian passport since it was expiring. Later on I learned that my citizenship is invalid and India does not have dual citizenship.
Anyways Im just worried now, what to do? Some people are telling me I need to surrender my passport and there might be penalties as well? I dont know the cost but why should I have to pay so much money to surrender it? Why did they issued me a visa without asking for my old passport back? And why did they even renew my passport if it was no longer valid?
What should I do now? Whats the next step? Please help!!!

Don't panic...even if you have to pay some penalty, it is not end of the world..yaar ki shaadi me aur bade deshon me chhoti choti bate hoti he ...anyhow.
How did you enter India? with Indian passport or Canadian? If Indian passport then yes you have to pay penalty but you are not in deep deep shit..
.If Canadian then you may not have to pay penalty..simply surrender your passport at VFS center and see what they say. I hope there are no entry exit stamping there on renewed passport.
Now as far as why they issued visa...how will they know that you still have Indian passport...there are thousands in India with the name of "Chulbul Pande", how will they which one you are ..Also when they renewed your passport..how will they know you already have canadian citizenship? Canada does not inform India or vice versa upon a person changing their loyalty...:P..it is individual's responsibility.
But since the error happened, take the chill pill and correct the error by surrendering Indian passport..the details are on Indian embassy site (including Penalties, etc).

But yeah, this leaves somewhat serious security threat..there should be collaborations in countries about this..not only to avoid these errors but also to close a security loophole.

Do you currently have renewed Indian Passport ? ... If so what is your problem .... Any government official contacted you ?
India never has offered dual citizenship. The closest they got to "dual citizenship" is OCI which is like a lifelong visa to go to India. You are no longer citizen of India and cannot apply for Indian passport (at least legally) once you get any other country's citizenship.
You should surrender your Indian passport and get a surrender certificate.

You did not know abt citizenship issues? Hmmm....that's a lame excuse. U knew it well but wanted to play it out. If educated ones like u break the rules, other law abiding folks have to pay and suffer.
