Happy New Year!
Saw this article that the bill to merge PIO and OCI is now tabled in RS. Anyone knows what the process is? How long before this becomes implemented?

I need to apply for one of these cards and am thinking of waiting for the new process implemented rather than applying for PIO or OCI now and then changing in a few months or worst, apply for OCI, get stuck in the process when the new one gets rolled out.
The VFS personnal at Brampton office was suggesting applying for OCI, saying the new one may take more time and OCI is better than PIO. Any thoughts?

If you are planning to pay a visit to INDIA in next year or so then apply for OCI ( keep in mind it takes couple of months to get the OCI ) .
Passing the BILL and its implementation can take time .
No plans for now. But need to get something in place for emergency purposes.
PIO is faster + I am reading some confusion regarding citizenship status regarding OCI in forums. Any reason OCI is better than PIO?

I think OCI is cheaper than PIO ( please verify it ) and you dont need to inform FRRO if you are staying in india for more than 6 months but OCI takes more time to process .
None of them gives you INDIAN citizenship ( the names are misleading ) .
OCI is not cheaper per se. They have reduced their fees from 450 to 250 or so (not sure of the exact dollar amount). OCI is a life long visa to India whereas PIO is valid only for 15 years. I think the fees for PIO is 150. Hope it helps
