After the takeover of the Chief Justice post by mr. Sathasivam from Tamil Nadu, there seems to be a new line of thinking on death sentence and especially on Rajiv Gandhi's killers.

The Supreme Court had recently passed a judgment, that because of the mental agony caused to the Rajiv Gandhi's assassins for waiting too long in the death row, the SC has commuted their sentence to one of life. Since they have spent more than 20 years in person already, the SC had also said the government can consider ordering their release.

The judgment was received with great jubiliation by leaders of fringe political parties. In an year of elections Karunanidhi and Jayalalitha also said they welcomed the judgement. Jayalalitha called for a cabinet meeting and ordered for the release of all seven convicts within 3 days pending any objection by the Central Government.

Only then those who want the country to be one at both the state and centre woke up from the slumber and now the central government has filed for a review of the SC judgment. SC has also realised that it might have opened pandora's box inviting release of all given death sentence and criticism of how the convicts earlier were hanged (like that of Afzal Guru and Kasab).

After their petitions have been rejected any number of times by the HC and SC and having reached the doors of the President, it may be for the President to dispose off, whether it takes 20 days, 20 years or 200 years. How can SC again interfere after they have themselves upheld the death sentence is the question many ask.
