Hi All:

My wife and I came to Toronto about 2 months ago....and moving to Canada is probably one of the good decisions we made so far! First of all, I would like to thank Canadiandesi.com for giving such useful info via their forums, I think it is a must read for all would be immigrants.

We arranged for furnished accomodation via the net and went there direct from the airport. The next day we completed the SIN Card and Bank account formalities. We were told at the bank that they would process a credit card after one of us has a job offer. I had written to a few companies (from India itself) in my line and luckily 3 of them indicated that they would like to interview me. The first one was 2 days after I landed - almost decided to take a cab but instead spoke to the TTC who told me which subway and which bus to take - these guys are very helpful!! Had the interview and it went well - was supposed to meet them again in 2 weeks and make a presentation.

We found a YMCA NIC (Newcomer Info Center) located 2 mins from our apartment - there was free computer access so most of the day was spent searching for jobs. The people there were very nice and helpful too. We got our PR Cards and SIN Cards within 2 weeks.

Had an interview with company #2 just a few days before I was slalted to make the presentation to company #1. I was surprised when they hinted at a possible offer in a week's time....However, I made the presentation to Company #1, was called back 2 days later and given a verbal offer....they told me to pick up the formal letter in a couple of days....I did that and am working at the same place now!! My wife & I were prepared to slog it out for quite some time here but it was a pleasant surprise to get a job in 3 weeks! I had to turn down the offer from company 2 and emailed company 3 that I will not be able to meet them (the int was in Mid April).

Went to the bank with the job offer letter and in 2 weeks had a credit card.

For those who have landed recently or who plan to come here soon:

1. Do research over the net for companies in Canada in your field. If you have a specific time frame in mind when u may be here, put that in your covering letter.

2. Use the resources of the YMCA NIC's and ERC's - specifically email all recruiters in your line - u can get this info from THE DIRECTORY OF CANADIAN RECRUITERS. Do not mass mail, instead write to each one individually.

3. Do not get discourgaged or lose heart if people portray a negative picture - things are tough but not impossible.

4. Do not lose your focus - do not get into other areas immediately after landing.

I wish you all the very best!

Regards,

DB

While I do agree that attitude (positive I may add) has a big part to play - but what about other qualifications - education, area of work, age (yes that plays a big big part!) and working experience history (which country and which company)? I think they play a bigger part in being called for an interview first. What about persons who have tremendous positive attitude, and over confidence at times, but are not called for interview - because in today's world, where the hirer does not have more than two minutes to have a first glance at a resume and decide to keep in file or throw in garbage, is most probably not able to get a feel of applicant's attitude from the resume.

Bingo!!
Way to go . Great news .
I am glad you guys made it after coming directly from india.

Also , good that you mention about NIC and YMCA those are invaluable resources for new comers.
i met desi this a few weeks back who recently got a job in his feild.
His secret was simple ... he went to YMCA,NIC and from the directory of firms in his feild all across canada he started contacting one by one, email and followup by phone ....after contacting over 300 of firms ....one firm in downtown Toronto hired him. but he did not give up looking till he got one .
What impressed me was his determination and confidence.

Just wanted to know what is your feild desibabu.
Hope your story works as an inspiration for the waiting and new immigrants.

Yoohoooo.
Thanks and welcome to Canada.
Samir

I did say attitude plays a big part :) . Not the ONLY part.;)
Over confidence is not really a +ve attribute when it comes to impressing employers either.

In my 8 yrs here ALL my jobs including labor jobs have all been based on an interview call after resume(no networking).

Ofcourse I have not been looking for the past 2 yrs. This present job is due to persistent emails and faxes of my resume to the HR dept. A cpl of my colleagues were upset that they chose to ship in a guy from TO when they had been rejected a cpl of times inspite of being bilingual Montrealers.

If you are looking for a job(which you like)...refuse to consider the negatives as long as your resources allow you to. Is it George Soros that said that being realistic is another way to be pessimistic? Worked for me and many others I know. :D
