I realize my question is very generalizing as I have not met most indians in the world, but the majority that I have met are either afraid or dislike dogs.
Can someone tell me what their opinion or theory is on this?

I don't think this is a sound generalisation 
I had a dog, had friends who had dogs, have children who want dogs, am not getting a dog just because its an additional responsibility.
To explain what you have seen.. maybe people are scared of dogs as they have never had the chance to interact with one or got bitten by one. Also, I have heard some people wonder about the need to spend time, affection and money on a dog when there are so many human beings that need the same.

I can safely say I love dogs and my dogs love me.

My dogs used to sleep with me on my bed till everyone objected too much.
I love dogs licking my hand and cheeks.
I love to kiss dogs.
I love to feed dogs
Love to play with them.
Love to see in their eyes.
Little dogs are naughty, they tear of everything and still i like them.
Love even neighbours dog or any dog met on my way.
Dogs just dont make a scare off cause I love them.
Sad part : they just die too soon, they have short life and make me miss them. So, now I dont want to have dog at home.
I do not like dogs, esp. the ugly looking ones or the scary ones. The only ones I can tolerate are those small furry ones.
However, I doubt if my "Indianness" has anything to do with my dislike of dogs. I am more of a "cat person".

When I was growing up in India, I mostly saw dogs that are either stray and hence totally unreliable or pet dogs that mostly were poorly brought up and hence making them unpredictable with visitors. Maybe, that's why a number of Indians have a sub-conscious paranoia of dogs. Of course, that doesn't mean Indians don't adopt dogs into their families. For me, they are just too much maintenance. I already have a son who drains the maintenance budget of ours

I don't dislike them but I don't trust them enough to like. So i don't like them
I don't like the thought of someone sniffing n licking my legs to face
I don't like the idea of living my daily life as per dog's schedule
I don't like the idea of receiving 14 shots on tummy. Dog is a dog is a dog - can't trust them.
I don't like the idea of Dogs !!!
Back in India, as a kid, all you see is stray-street dogs. That's where they belong and that's where they are to be kept. They have enough survival skills to live on their own. It is just rich people's natak.

Lot of money of spend on these creatures..why not spend on your own kids and your self.
One of co-workers had to take his dog to a vet in the night----total bill $2K. His wife was against it and both end up separating as he used to spend more time with his dog and watching movies.
