I'm letting this go on for a purpose.

Last time I locked a thread on religious discussions, the freedom of speech advocates all jumped on me.

My presumption however of the lifecycle of a religious discussion on an internet forum/blog is this

1 Starts out cordially with valid points
2 Gets a bit edgy and may upsets very sensitive people
3 Gets downright offensive when people want to make a point by hook or crook. At this point it basically ticks off a lot of sensible people.
4 All kinds of jokers log in from both sides and then its basically a mud-fest where everyone's just calling everyone else names.
5 Obviously one post is not enough in this case, so a whole bunch of posts get started by both sides.
6 A forum like Canadiandesi then just becomes a place for people to vent and loses its purpose.

I've seen this happen gradually EVERY SINGLE TIME. No matter what the intent or relevance of the original post. In this case, I think we're at stage 3 and not far from stage 4. And what's the point of all this?? Absolutely nothing. You're only kidding yourself if you think that anyone from the opposite religion is actually changing his perspective based on your points. On the contrary, you're making people defensive on things that they may not completely agree with themselves.

From a strict "freedom of speech" perspective, these discussion are fine and people should be allowed to express. But try to reconcile this with the purpose of the forum. i.e. to help prospective immigrants AND the people already in Canada out with information and resources. To be a platform for Canadiandesis to share constructive information and thoughts. And if possible, even to help people find friends and socialize at a certain level.

There are dozens and dozens of forums on the net where people of different reglions can duke it out with "my God better than your God, my people better than your people". Canadiandesi is NOT one of them.

So for the sake of people needing information about Canada and people volunteering their precious time to deliver, please stop this before it gets even uglier. I don't think any of us want these topics to consume and defeat the purpose of this discussion forum.

I totally agree with you. that is why I was critical but sarcastic.
Thinking that at least my comedy would ease-up the heat.
I am ok with people discussing debatable topics like this, but one should not take it to a level whre it seems like there is virtual confrontation (in writing on the board). Every one should and can post their views, but should not blow-up the decorum of the forum.
So I thought let us try too calm it a bit. thanks for coming in..
