Hello everybody,
We applied for immigration in Apr 2003 and finally received our papers in 2008 Dec. The situation is bleak the world over and that puts us in a dilema.
We have been following all the posts and can see two possibilities/thoughts emerging
1. Wait till 2010 wherein there is a possibility of things improving
and
2. Come in 2009, work hard(survival jobs) and prepare(study) for good times
I am a Masters in Biochemistry and Marketing and have 7 yrs work experience in Pharma marketing and 9 yrs experience in teaching at an undergraduate level(Nutrition,Marketing and Microbiology) . We understand the importance of Canadian degrees for integrating in the canadian society and are prepared to do so while working since our funds are limited. We plan to settle in Toronto
I would like to know
a) Are survival jobs ( Call center) affected?
b)Which possibility should we follow of the above two?
Regards,
jwagh
If your funds are limited as you say, then I would recommend caution.
Especially if you have a secure, well paying job in India.

Please keep in mind that the visa documents have a validity and you along with your family must become landed immigrants before the expiry date. You would not like to lose all the wait and patience thinking of the right time to land.
Best wishes

Thanks for the reply pratickm and pkalra
(It really depends on what kind of support system you will have here.)
No we do not have any relatives so we are on our own
(Do you have someone who can guide you through the job search process?)
We are depending on the internet for all information
(Can you get your India job back if things don't work out here?)
No it is not a govt job where i can take a leave
(What are the job prospects in Canada for your field?)
I will have to take a Canadian degree for a good job in my field, but we are prepared to take simple jobs , study and try to take jobs in our fields. But in these recessionary times are the simple (survival) jobs available ?
pkalra, I think I made an error while phrasing my query, we plan to land before our visas expire but were thinking of just landing or landing for good.
Our only dilema is whether to land for good in 2009 or land, go back and come in 2010

The best thing would be if you can manage vacation of one month from your current employer then Come to Canada and complete PR etc formalities and have first hand feel of things and then decide.
Call center jobs too have been badly affected by the current slowdown and many companies have outsourced their call center to other countries.
Good luck!
Come now . Join university. start studying. do part time jobs. by 2010/2011 you will be ready with your canadian degrees once the market improves.

You know you are a desi when ........ You spew forth the virtues of India, but don't want to live there...............You've never had a tanning salon membership
Thank You Kalia and loser!!
What I gather at this from the posts at this moment is
a) Jobs are difficult to get but not impossible
b) 2010 could be a little too early to expect economic recovery, so studying or upgrading in a particular field is a better option while doing part time jobs
c) Housing constitutes a major chunk of the budget.
I would request form the desis the following info
1) After landing and staying for a week in a guest house(e.g Sunny guest house) is it possible to rent a place(a studio/1bhk) on short term rental say 3 -4 months without jobs?
2 ) Apart from call centre jobs what other survival jobs do new comers do?
3) Are there any reliable job search agencies in Toronto which menbers on
the forum have tried?
Regards,
jwagh
