A big hello to all Canadian desis.

I was looking at the prospect of moving to Alberta. I have my masters in EE from a university in the US and have been working for a semiconductor company for the past 4 years in the US on a H1 B visa. I heard that Alberta is fast tracking the immigration process for people with H1B Visas

Before statrting the process I just had a few questions

1. Is it tough to find engineering positions in Alberta (Edmonton or Calgary)

2. Is US experience recogonized in Canada

3. How about finding 12 to 15 dollar per hour jobs incase I am not able to find a full time position

4.What's the cost of living in Edmonton/ Calgary (like rent, insurance etc etc..)

Your replies are highly appreciated!!!!

All semiconductor jobs are in Ontario and Quebec.

Don't even think about moving to Canada!

If you want to stick around in North America, see to it that your employer initiates the GC process asap. You still have two years on your H1, should be able to get your 485 cleared in time to get the 7th (and subsequent) year extension.

If you come to Canada, you will in a way 'back-tracking' your career by three years (at least)...will wait for the citizenship and then move back to the US anyways. Waiting for your GC makes much more sense instead.

You have a Masters in EE from the US, make use of it.

With your qualifications you will still manage to get a job, but think about the pay cut you will need to take..and trust me Canada ain't anything like the US..it has been discussed so many time on this forum...just search them and you will find your answers.

Cheers!

Thanks for your replies, but situation in the US is not that rosy as everyone thinks. Economy is so bad as of now that all big companies are laying off thousands of workers. Even the so called survival jobs are difficult to find here. Any Desi from Edmonton, please let me know of the cost of living and the chances of getting a 10 to 15 dollar job. I would really appreciate it

Same is the case here too.
Alberta is famous for oil sands. Oil sands is profitable only at $60 and above a barrel of oil. Now with Oil at $54 , it is the same situation in Alberta too. Many companies are laying off 100's of workers (b'cos population is only 33 million in Canada and not 330 million as in USA).
So make an informed decision and not a rash one. You may regret it.
Peace

Hi TK,

Thanks for your reply. Is situation so bad that one cannot even get 10 to 15 dollars per hour job. My plan is to pursue my MBA either in Edmonton or Calgary while doing some kind of part-time job. If I get a full-time job in my field that's an additional bonus

Please do reply
