Nice timing...Bush is in Beijing. The west/NATO will probably cry foul. However the Russians will draw parallels over the US involvement in Kosovo. They have been citing ethnic cleansing by the Georgians as one of the reasons of going in. There are US bases and marines in Georgia...however, they may not get involved as things could get very ugly for the US too. Especially since Russia is the only country in the world that can destroy the US...especially if they decide to go out in a blaze of glory.
The US activities will probably be relegated to money and operational/covert/CIA subversive activities against the Russians. The Russians will probably win this round though.

Could be just a regional conflict albeit with the potential to suck others in.

Irans backers are busy (China with the olympics and now Russia)...at a time that Iran is sending the wrong messages out about its nuclear stand.

Well, Russia and the US aren't exactly on buddy terms right now anyways, this just adds to the escalating animosity and couldn't come at a worse time for the states who're stretched so thin with all the wars and economic issues...
