Hello everyone,
I need help, suggestions,advices.
Iam currently in Scarborough, it been like one and half month here in Canada(Earlier before MBA, I used to work in another location in Canada as Accountant--so have Canadian work experience .I finished my MBA in USA.Iam a PRCard holder.Iam on the verge of getting a job here.Even otherwise, one good offer is cropping up in a week or two.
My wife and kids(2 small babies) are in Albany with my sister.I thought once I get a job,I will fix an apt., move my things from Rochester-storage bins here and apply for my wife and one kid(other kid was born in USA) for PRCard.
I really need advice here regarding the following things:
1. What is the most cost effective manner in which I can move my household goods from Rochester,NY to here? and how long will it take to come. I might need help arranging it also.(Can someone/organization help me n arranging the items in an apt.? How cheap will it all be?)
2. What is the minimum time for my wife and first kid to get Canadian PR. I know my second kid can stay in Canada with her american citizenship but I want to know whether Canadian PR is essential for her too for school and stuff? What will be the cost of the PR Process?
3. What sops can I get for my kids?--child tax benefit,$100 or so govt subsidy, etc
4. Which area is good for raising family? My office location will be near downtown or if the second job fructifies near Finch-Northyork.--Which area is good?My budget initially is $800 to $850 for two bedroom. Maybe I can go up to $900/$950 but not beyond $1000. I need a two bedroom apartment for sure.
Please help me with the 4 questions.
Thankyou very much

Moving Tips, If you need them. : http://www.movermax.com/moving_tips_and_move_guide.asp
You pack and they move : http://www.movermax.com/moving_guides/self_service/you_pack_we_drive_movers_right_for_you.asp
They have cross border movers, see their web site and also contact them over the phone. Best thing will be a ""U- Haul"" - ONE WAY and pay the drop off charges. But for that, you have to take bus to Rochester, one way trip. It will cost you $300 or so + the other charges, such as Gas, Oil, toll charges, breaks and other items such as driving delays etc., also the one way bus fare. See what you can accomplish all by your self. There will be a lot of delays at the border in this residential transfer. See if you have the time. By the by have you made a 'goods to follow declaration' when you first landed here?? Do you have a copy and the approximate amounts.. etc., you will need that to bring the stuff in. There are, ATLAS Van lines, 'Mayflower' - Movers etc., and many more in the yellow pages. Call a few of them and see the costs. I have given you the two top movers.
If you have not done so already, It will take a minimum of 18 to 22 months. That does not stop your family from visiting and staying with you. Apply for a visitors visa and get them in.
After you live here and pay Taxes etc., and file 'the returns' you will be entitled to the Sales Tax benefit. If you use monthly pass for the public transportation, you will get a small tax break also. The less you purchase TAXABLE items, the more you save. In short try and avoid the luxury items. Just stick with BARE necessities for a start.
It is all here and needs no explanation. Remember that there is a cut off point also. You are right there now.

Your budgeting is very stringent. You must have done your exercise and the studies on rentals. You could find one under that price line. The newer quotes are a lot above that and it is due to the increase in the cost of the utilities and heating too. The current rates are a pinch above the lines you have provided. One of them is offering a months rent off if you sign an agreement with them. I would advice you to hold it till you first SETTLE down in a job and then decide upon the location and the rental amount. Since you are also looking for the educational needs, first go for the Education, find a suitable location that has all of the schools, then a location to stay near by the schools.Try and stay with in the boundaries of the GTA, for the convenience of the transportation, if it is possible, on or near by the subway lines, for easy commute. 30 -40 minutes each way to down town Toronto.
This renter has four locations. One of them will suit you. The numbers are : 416 200 0429, - 0502, - 0985, - 3057. He also provides you with two month free rent at one of his locations. (Main Street Properties) There are others, you have to do your spade work.
Alternately if you want to drive to the 'Kiss and Ride' lots, you can move slightly outside of GTA, such as Erin Mills or The Vaughn areas and find a very nice Apartment, for the rent you pay and on the long run, will be able to build equity. I don't have to tell you that, you being an MBA. Now Make a valued judgment and keep your eye balls peeled open for the next few weeks and walk your fingers through the Apartment sales in the street corner magazines. Explore the highlighted subjects thoroughly and see what the benefits are?
Now, just for the asking, you wouldn't happen to know the recipe for the pickle I once enjoyed at Coorg, in Mercara? Mmmmmm...If you do, can you please provide me with exact quantitative measurements for TWO pounds of Ambadas; The type of chillies, the Mustard, the Hing and the time it takes to grind etc., etc.,? I know, I will finish it all in a day, what is the use! (Fair exchange of information is no robbery)
Hope this helps you a little.
Freddie.

Hi there Ambadas,
Congratulations on becoming a Father.
Thanks for asking. I have traveled a few of the places, by road, and it was long and dragging. One of the stops along the way was in Mercara. The food was excellent, at a local Udupi Restaurant. The home made chalu pickle was made with that ingredient. Which is:Ambate. It was called Ambado.
In a few locations it has a name of its own. In Mexico, they call it the JOBO. In Nigeria, they call it the 'Udara' and in Jamaica it is called the Spanish Plum or the Gully Plum. The Caribs call it the Hog Plum. in India in the Coorg area, they call it the Ambado(w). Hence the type of pickle that I ate brought about the memories. So did your nom de plume and the request for the recipe, to go with it, if you knew it. I see you do too. Thanks. Now I will hunt the Basic ingredient. Another one was Appe midi. Small tiny mangoes on a string (Stems). You say it will get ready in a week. Not in my place. I call it 'Gayab', There are four states. First is solid, the second is liquid, then the vapour. Here we have the fourth, it just skips the third and enters the 'Gayab' state.
Since you are right here, you can get all the help from these people. You also can sponsor through the local offices in Mississauga. You will do better talking with the ever so helpful Immigrant Center there, and the one here in Mississauga. They are there just to help people who are seeking little bit of help. They will give you all of the procedures, the forms and a helping hand. Here is their link : http://www.canadiandesi.com/read.php?TID=20059
Your spouse can declare all of these and bring them in at the time of her entry. Alternately, if you are at her end for a few days, then, you can bring what ever the amount they will permit you at the time you CROSS the Border. It all depends on the number of days stay in the US and the dollar value permitted, based on your stay. Try the CBSA website.
Items of no value, or not for resale items, can be brought through the Greyhound Ground services in small quantities at a time, or along with you. Contact them for the baggage allowances and the charges for the additional weight. You pay for the extra items. Also pre arrange for a Van for you to meet at the Canadian end to take you, for the onward journey to a location that you normally stay. Make sure that you are settled down in a place for a little while.
Thanks for asking. I am a Cajun of Indian Descent. Pass through this website once a day, mostly after I had a nights rest. Just to help a few that I can with a little bit of help.
Thanks for all of the gastronomic recipes and the ingredients. Some of them are hard to come by except in the dried state,.or pickled. I can safely say that I have tasted them all on your list, bought most of them here in Toronto too, except the Ambate.
Have a good one.

Hi,
I need some suggestions and advice in moving. I am replying to this considering you successfully made a move from US to Canada.
We are making a potential move from Baltimore, MD to Halifax. Can you please advice us what steps you took and how you made the move(hired a movers or rented U haul and drove yourself)?
If you imported a car from US to Canada and moved the stuff from here, what are the necessary steps to be taken while dealing with border people and customs?
How much did it cost when you moved the stuff?
I would appreciate if you can provide us with any information helpful with the move.
I am sorry if I assumed that you moved to Canada and if you did not actually moved.
