Thanks.

Photo scanned next day? That is pretty quick. Earlier photo scanning itself used to take couple of weeks (probably scanned in India).

Do not know current timeline but used to be around 2 months.

i know, photo scanning was super quick but now it has been almost 2 weeks

other people who have applied recently like desi #1, akkiluck, krazyfour, etc please post your timelines for everyone's benefit, thanks a lot.

Hi Fellas,

I have just obtained my citizenship. I want to know if there's really a benefit of OCI, and to pay a hefty $300 for the same? I mean apart from visa free entry to India. Just wondering if it's really worth the time and money if you're not going back to India in order to live/work there.

Also, what are the tax implications for OCIs (if any)?

Thank you.

That will depend on your personal case.. how often you visit, will you require to travel to India on emergencies, want to own properties in India, how long will you stay there when visiting etc.

There are no tax implications currently, but things can change in future (you have the option to give up OCI too)

Does anyone know what I can use for proof that my grandmother or grandfather were Indian citizens? Have any grandchildren of ex-Indian citizens on this board applied for OCI?

I visited my grandmother and we checked for an Indian passport. She doesn't seem to have that, nor a birth certificate from India (probably wasn't ever issued one).

This would be for an application in Vancouver.

If you were Indian citizen before acquiring Canadian citizenship, then you just need to prove that you were Indian citizen before. You do not have to provide proof that your parents or grandparents are Indian citizens.

You would require to prove grandparents citizenship only if you or your parents were not Indian citizens.

For what document is acceptable as proof, you can call or email consulate.
