I am in the process of preparing my C.V.. I would like to know form the experienced immigrants that what is the normally accepted size of a C.V. of a senior finance/accounts professional.
If it is too long, they may not really read it. If it is short, they may think that I am not experienced enough.

Hi there

two pages is acceptable for a resume. If you are preparing a full CV with published papers and presentations and other background information then 7-12 pages.

No more than 2 pages. You can find samples online or go to your local library or employment resource centre (Service Canada locations have information about these and other employment information)

I will share my experiences of CVs.

Every one who checked mine at the ‘Government Funded Job Hunt Centers’ told that it needs polishing. S(h)e will make many changes to give an entirely new look to the resume (some even changed done by them, saying who prepared it so bad). They corrected the big mistakes of full stop, comma and reshuffling the material boldly. I had multi type of CVs in my files- functional, non- functional, chronological, historical and all sort of; but for (good) job. I have seen employers using dustbins for resumes even before giving a nice glance to them. After living on hand to mouth jobs for 3.5 years and 1.5 years on EI; I love Canada, my Country, my Home. But for ‘my office’ I had to go south of border.

My best wishes in your job hunt spree.

I agree with Benparsad

Don't ever go to any Govt sponser agency. They will really spoil ur Resume.
You go to one , they will do Corrections & will say u r wrongly guided
Now go to another agency next door, they will again say same thing

This agency, don't know anything abt Resume. and if it is Technical, just forget it. This agency will get Grant from govt depending upon how many candidates attended. They will always ask all details like PR Card, SIN Card etc, What for?

So my advice make ur Resume 2 pages ideally. Even 3 pages are okay many time if more exp

Always talk to people form ur field & take suggestions

Best Luck for Job Search. YOU ARE IN CANADA. WELCOME

you are entitled to your opinion of course but I dont agree with you that government sponsored agencies will "really spoil your Resume". As a former employment counsellor WITH one of the government sponsored agencies I see a different side of it and encourage people to get assistance with resumes and coverletters etc. People who are professionals in a variety of occupations will be able to provide you with labour market information and tell you what is happening in your industry and who the key players are. However they are not resume and interview technique experts. Those in employment centres ARE..as it is their job to teach you how to prepare for the job hunting process.

As you say you are in Canada. Providing FREE help is just one of many services and benefits of living in this particular country. A person can get a resume made from elsewhere but it will likely cost you. These services do not cost the job seeker any money and I have seen first hand people who have very little personal resources be able to access resource rooms to email and fax their resumes..to get help..to find out where to go..to find out about job openings..

So please dont judge everyone to be the same.

Dear Morning Rain,

I very much appreciate your reply. As a former employment councilor you are very welcome to defend; but let me first emphasize my question, who controls the job market? Certainly the employer and the employer and only the employer. May be they should be made part of this all set up. They should be encouraged/ forced to come at these centers and tell what kind of resume ‘They’ like to see.

If I go by my job hunt history, making a nicest resume never helped. I was hired if and when ‘They’ need someone. Considering that an average person will make a normal CV, putting in the required things in that; further playing with it is of no help unless there is a job.

Then certainly, in my experience, my every resume was first looked down by every councilor and updated; to be looked upon and up-dated by next one. Well, fax and phone facilities are welcome things for a new comer who normally is not in a position to spend money directly on these. But how come it is all free? Job Help Centers get grants from Canadian government which comes from taxes paid by all (including me).

I know a person who after struggling a lot took a wiser step. He started a side business to help newcomers in job hunt/ computer skills and like; keeping an eye on government funds in lieu of this initial investment and hard work.

After 7 years in IT Industry. 5 different Jobs. and some 20 Odd Interviews. I can say one thing that Size Does not Mater. Its the content.

Go through the Job Postings that you normally would end up applying for in Monster/Workopolis. Pickup 'Key Words' from the Description and Use those words on First Page. Make those words Bold.

Resume is like Costumes on Mallika Sherawat. It should be minimum enough to attract the Interest while still covering essential Bases. I'll loose interest if she is covered Head to Toe - no mater how good is the Dress.
