Hello Sakhis and Sakhas(who often visit this forum)

In our busy lives and schedules of balancing family, work and children it often becomes very difficult to take care of our own health and fitness. Many of us feel that only if we had a partner with whom we could regulary exercise. However the distances here in the GTA make if very difficult to have something of that sort.

So instead what I suggest is we form an online community, even this forum would do, and commit to ourselves and each other to do some daily exercise and also follow a fitness regimen in terms of healthy eating and living an overall balance lives. Everyday we could give an update here on this site of what type of exercise we did, whether we missed out and if we did what are we going to do tomorrow to make up for it. We can also motivate and push others who would join this group but are not regulars.

Apart from this we could share tips on healthy eating, balance living and maintaining overall well being.

Also as a group we could have a monthly meeting held somewhere centrally where we can discuss issues and if not have a great time. This would serve as a great opportunity of meeting everyone in the community and also making and developing great friendships.

So anyone ready to join in...

Nice idea.

If you get enough interest I could request someone(a desan I met...if you are not already that person) from the fitness field, to be part of your initiative. This person was recently talking to me about such an initiative mainly targetted at women in the community. Only she wasnt talking about an online initiative, but it does fit in together with what she mentioned.

Sounds cool.

I usually do stretching exercises, neck turns, shoulder shrugging and light weight toning just to circulate the blood and keep slightly nimble.

Will elaborate each exercise, daily one, starting with the first thing I do.

Stand feet apart about 8 inches and move nech clockwise 20 times and then anti-clockwise 20 times, then press chin agnst chest and swing back nexk as far as I can also 20 times.

Is this what u r looking for?

Hi investpro,

Absolutely. This is exactly what I am talking. I do yoga which I have been doing since last 10 years and meditation which I recently started, thanks to Ramdev Baba.
I use to play badminton a few years ago, but that stopped since we (me and my husband) could no longer find partners to play with. Initially we use to rent a space in our local community centre.

Apart from this I try to incorporate healthy eating habits into my daily life, the most important of which includes staying away from maida (white flour) which I've been doing since my arrival here in north america around 8 years ago. The reason I mentioned this is because here we are bombarded with white flour products packaged in attractive packaging and having zero nutrition value. So it is very important for us to see how much of these products we consume and also teach our children to make healthy choices right from the begining

Hi PP,
I see you restarted this thread again under fitness and wellness.

Actually sprained my back while picking up some heavy stuff from Canadian Tire so was actually doing back exercises to get my back back into shape. Too many backs there.

Picking up on the food. My B/F usually consists of bran or other cereal, milk and fruit (banana, apple, melon) w/o sugar. Of course it is preceded by steeped or boiled tea, milk and sugar as soon as I get up and after brushing my teeth. All this is about 400 calories.

Lunch is usually anything but around 500-600 calories.

Then coffee, cream and sugar around 3 pm- 100- 150 calories

The dinner is usually soup and something light incl fruit- anything around 300-400 calories.

This adds up to around 1500- 1600 cals a day. As a general rule of thumb , guys need around 2000-2200 cals per day, so I am consuming 400- 600 cals less per day than I need, or around 3500 calories per week. I am sure you know that leads to a 1 lb loss

As I am on a diet to lose weight at a reasonably steady pace - I have since Diwali lost 8 pounds- the first week here was a loss of 3 lbs due they say to water loss.

This is to continue for 6 weeks and then one is to stay steady for 3-4 weeks and then again hit the 1500-1600 cals per day schedule and continue till you lose whatever you set out to do, which in my case is 20 lbs.

So far it has been working. It's basically a cal controlled diet more than less carbs and more protein or anything other such thing.

I don't know if you are a lady or not- but the general rule of thumb I think for you is that you need 1500-1600 cals a day so eat less than that to lose weight.

A Canadian politician also followed the same diet on a more pronounced scaled by consuming only 800 calories a day and lost tremendous weight fast.

The idea is to fill yourself with more fruits and cereals and eat less cal than you need.

After I lose the weight I wish to, then I'll concentrate on eating healthier stuff.

I'm not sure if its a good idea to lose weight by dieting alone. One may end up losing muscle and bone density too. This not only results in less strength and energy but also an untoned body. This may not bode well in ones later years.

http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/Press_releases/2005/05_25a_05.html

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and its Heart Institute. “However, excess fat does have the benefit of maintaining bone mass. But fat loss through diet alone can lead to loss of bone, worsening the body’s natural bone loss due to aging, a major risk factor for bone fractures.”

Ofcourse, if it puts you on a path to an active lifestyle and reduces health risks...whatever works.

How the weight is distributed on a body makes a difference too. If one is 200 pounds at 5'10" but at a 33 inch waist...the person may look better and be much fitter than one at 170 pounds with a 36 inch waist.
