Let me provide you more information on my situation.

I myself a Canadian Citizen. I was married on Jan 17, 2006 in court. Jan 17 is the marriage date shown on my marriage certificate. We held traditional marriage ceremony on Jan 31, 2006. Our invitation cards showed marriage date to be Jan 31. ( I completly forgot to make sure that I have Jan17 invitation cards. Very very big mistake on my part)

I came back to Canada Feb 20, 2006. I filed a PR application for my wife. She got letter couple of days back with following informatio in letter.

1. Original Marriage Certificate/registration with English or French Translation for self-amended certificate to show correct date of marriage i.e. 31.1.2006
==================

Now Question is am facing is
We have already sent them original marriage certificate stating Jan 17.

From what they are asking me to create a new marriage certificate with date Jan 31. Wouldn't that be wrong ?

What should I do ?

Should I write a letter of explanation explaining why we had traditional marriage ceremony on Jan 31?

Please provide guidance on this.

you can write to explain and try to get a replacement mariage certificate with correct date on it. ... I suspect the explanation may be sufficient because the legal marriage was performed on 17th.

I have a similar issue.

I am a PR and went to India and got married. We had a religious ceremony in the last week of August with a lot of people invited. I have numerous photographs and invitation letters for that date. Our church marriage certificate bears this date.

However, we were told that this will not be accepted for immigration. also had a civil marriage almost 2 weeks later (it could only be done after 30 days of registering the marriage). So we have a legal marriage certificate with this new date. But we do not have phototgraphs or invitation letters for that date.

When I apply for immigration, which date do I have to show? Or can I show both dates and provide this explanation? Is it illegal to have 2 wedding dates? Please advise...

Explaination would be a good option.

For all practical pusposed, the date shown on the marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriages under the Hindu Marriage Act (or any other act if applicable to you), is the date of your marriage. You may or may not have photographs for that. And since you have the photographs clicked on a different date, it calls for explaination.

Although, these days in India, all temples etc issue certificates of marriage. And normally people are expected to apply for registration with the Registrar showing the same date of marriage on the application form. This avoids all the confusion.

It is illegal in India to be married to more than one woman at the same time. But the law perhaps is silent on marrying the same woman more than once. The date of marriage would be the date mentioned on the marriage certificate issued by the Registrar.
