Did anyone read India Today April 10, 2006 issue? There is a good article reg obesity in India. Looks like it is catching up very fast, would be in par with USA in the matter of time.
Some reasons: Less walking, more junk food, eating more during dinner especially for kids (“they need to be strong”).

IMHO, Indians were denied good things for a long time during the CONgress rule. Since the economy has opened up, middle class and above desis are out of control in eating habits. Less walking since almost everyone has at least a two wheeler, eating out big time, eating while watching TV, eating late, etc contribute to the obesity.

Some of the highlights in the article:
17% of Delhi school children suffer from obesity
35 million Indians are diabetic (more than the total population of Canada)
33% rise in heart disease due to obesity
40% growth in fast food industry

I'd read an article that kids as young as 17 were showing symptoms of diabetes. When most socialising and entertaining revolves around food...its easy to see why obesity is on the rise. It takes a mindshift not to equate eating with entertainment. In most cases, kids tend to pick up the lifestyle of the parents...the effects show when the kids are in their mid-thirties, if not earlier.

I think that when parents are active and make time for exercise and/or outdoor activities...the kids develop that lifestyle easier. Its easy for me to say...I'm a fitness freak.

Unfortunately, indian diet especially vegetarian diet is rich in carbs and has less proteins. I was raised as a vegetarian and am trying to increase my protein intake. Even many of the curries have potatoes as one of the main ingredients.

I hope you mean substituting some of your carb intake with proteins.

If you are worried about the protein in your diet you can supplement it with whey based protein. Good quality protein can be found from sites like supplementscanada.com. Add it to milk, juice or even in your baked food. Whey protein isolates contain almost no fat/cholestrol(compared to food like meat and cereals). Apparently whey protein isolates, where protein is extacted by the micro filteration process have the best benefits. I give this info so someone knows what to look/research if/when they use the link I have given.

NOTE: One CAN get all the necessary protein needed from normal foods. However, in the case of athletes supplementing their diets with protein supplements *may* help, since the other alternative is to eat a LOT of protein rich food(which contain additional fat anyway, even if one can afford the time to eat all that food). Maybe this is applicable to vegetarians(who want to decrease body fat) also.

Ofcourse when you increase calorie consumption(protein or whatever) you should also make sure that you actually need the same.i.e: increase in calories without increase in physical activity results in unwanted pounds

Thanks. I will check out whey protein in Helath Food stores.

Currently, my protein intake comes from egg whites, occasional fish, and sprouted beans. I donot dare to eat just cooked beans. can't digest.

Though recently, south american researchers found a way to make beans easy on digestive system. Let's see when it is commercially available.
