I donot know if you will belive this , but i have encountered some wierd people in the course of my professional life.Desi's who make deals to cheat other desi's , Gora's , cats etc...
While in Malaysia, i was with a fellow desi architect (he is from my university and is senior to me by 8 years). He is 44, an australian citizen then and owned 3 houses in chennai. He did not inherit anything and was on rs. 5,000 salary at the age of 30. He got his visa to australia at the age of 32 and he did not have money for the flight to australia. HE was working in L&T then as an architect, but in the russian cell. They were building a 5 * hotel at Tashkent. The furniture contractor was from mumbai and he had all the furniture in a knocked out condition to be shipped to tashkent. This architect was the one to inspect it and give it approval. If the architect said NO, then the furniture contcator was to re do the whole furniture or remedy the discrepancy. This will be a huge amount. The total value of the bill was 60 lakhs (in 1991).
This Architect then made a deal with the furniture guy that he will pass the furniture without any inspection but in return he needed flight ticket (one way) to Australia for him, his wife and infant, Rs. 10K in Cash and a Gold Chain. He got it and went there for free. He also told me that that individual gave it with joy. (it is another story how he did not get any job there- recession time. This individual then was on welfare list of 2 states of Australia at the same time).
I met him in Malaysia and we worked in the same office. He was a very sweet guy and talks well. He was working in the office that i worked and stayed in the same house as i.
He was a very stingy man. When we go out for shopping, he used to buy a burger for himself but never used to give it to his wife or child (The child used to ask him for the burger but he used to fire his wife for not feeding the child properly in the house). He used to buy a lot of shirts for himself but his wife and child had only limited dresses.
The blankets that he used was in tatters (b'cos it was his grandmothers) and he had stitched the holes to use it. His wife was a draftswoman. He made his wife to do overtime at the office while he will not stay in the office a minute after office hours. He will return home and watch either a movie or hear songs or just lie in the bed. He also will never help his wife to cook, wash, clean, take care of his child (then 6 years old). Even at the age of 6 , he never used to send her to a school in malaysia since he said that the fee was too high. She went to a cheap day care. He said that anyway she will go to a good school in australia later. Luckily we were in Malaysia just for a year. we were laid off and then he went to Australia after a 1 months holiday in India.
In fact, it was only he who told me about immigration. He also told me not to immigrate to Australia since it was too competitive but to try NZ or Canada. He also told me that (in 1997-98) not to tell anyone about immigration. The reason being that then many would apply and immigrate and this would mean more competition for jobs. All this was nullified by the internet revelution.
He used to ask us to buy him free beer, chicken etc.. which we did b'cos he was a good talker and we used to talk for long hours with him esp. friday night and saturday night.
So this was one typical guy that i was made to be with.
