Hi DesiTiger

Very nice post and the initiative is well appreciated.
I am willing to join the group and help immigrants.
Fairly successful myself and my spouse, if you need any help in financial services, you can count me in.
Incidentally, my company is recruiting people, if there are any candidates with financial services experience, please send pm to me asap.

Best regards

Lali

May I suggest that anything that you do should be in nature of Counselling aiming to achieve and bring about behaviour modification than in the form of theoritical advice or suggestions.

Thanks paramhams03. Give me a shout when you are in TO and we can chat about how you can help us in this effort.

I'm glad you bought up the nature of mentorship that we plan to provide, you are right; we will focus on bringing about a change in thought patterns and attitudes rather than just talk about what works and what doesn't. I feel that once people start thinking in a certain way, they are able to recognize patterns, oppurtunities and also solutions more easily, than otherwise.

Thanks for your support and look forward to hearing from you in August.

Cheers

DT

Hi all,

Our first meeting yesterday was a success and I would like to thank sudesingh, lana2005, azazf and my2cents for their efforts, support and excellent ideas.

I would also like to thank all the CD members who have volunteered to help us in this effort and we will keep everybody posted regarding the progress of this program.

Last but not the least, I would like to congratulate the few mentees who have stepped forward to participate in this program; I'm sure that with spirit, determination and positive thinking, we will be able to accomplish what we have set out to do - helping new immigrants recognize the process of gaining positive employment - The North American way!

The group is currently in process of designing a roadmap that will help us direct the program into the next stage(s). We will be contacting the mentees in the next 2 weeks with further details.

If you would like to participate in this program as a mentee or help out in any way, please contact me at

Yours Sincerely,

DT

Hi,
Does the mentorship extend to those who are currently in India? If it does, please read on:

I will be 40 by the time I reach Canada (if my PR gets through).

1. No, I am not asking if that is a good age to immigrate --- that has already been answered in another thread.

2. I have 3 years still in India. What can I do in India in these 3 years that will help me get a job with a salary of around 40k once in Canada?

3. I do not want to continue in my present line (teaching) -- Cause the mandatory Canadian B.Ed takes 4 years to complete.

4. I have explored taking courses in India in either one of the following:
a) Human Resource Management
b) MIS
c) Software programming

However I understand that very few would opt to hire a 40 year old fresher in the last two career choices, specially when there are so many young graduates with experience.

What should my modus operandi be with the first option / any other career choices so that I could get jobs as fresher even at the age of 40?

You are right on most of these points. Yes you are at a certain disadvantage due to your current profession and Yes employers will prefer people with more experience. That said, it doesn't by anyway mean that You can't make it here in Canada. My advice to you is this, decide on a field that you feel the most comfortable with (and which you find thru research to have a good scope in Canada). Get training in this field and then try to find employment in a company in India with a brand name recognizable in Canada. You should be able to get pretty decent training within 1 year and you can spend the remaining two years gaining solid work experience. If the company you plan to work for has operations in Canada, it'll make things a lot easier when you move. I would also suggest that you start applying for jobs while working in India. I have some tips regarding that so when you are ready to start job hunting, let me know and I'll provide them to you.

Last but not the least; you are only as old as you feel. The guy interviewing you won't know (or ask) for your age and it won't be an issue unless you make it out to be. In the end, it's how you present yourself that makes an interviewer perceive you as sedentary (and old) or energetic (young and with it).

Best of Luck and Keep in touch

Regards

DT
