Thank You DT for the advice. I'm beginning the search for HR courses in my city right away. I will definitely mail you when I start job hunting.

Your take on age is absolutely right. Mine is the same too. :) But I asked the age related question because in India, most resumes have the age of the person (or date of birth) mentioned in them. When I worked in an executive search organisation, many times the brief given to us was "find so and so qualified people with so and so experience within so and so age". Hence the age question.

And a very valid question at that. Thankfully, in North America, employers focus more on skills rather than personal attributes so listing your date of birth on the resume won't be a problem you'll have to worry about.

Cheers

Though not directly related to the original thread, but not digressing too, I would tend to disagree with you on this part. I am one person who has suffered a lot on this issue - more so because I look even older than I am. There have been questions (in North America) related to age in the interviews that I have attended. Questions like:

- how would you feel working in an environment where almost everyone is young and your boss would be much younger to you?

- this is a very fast paced organisation where most of our work is done on a work station (and this is related to pure accounting) - will you be able to work fast enough on the computers? (This one is an indirect quetion related to age where it is generally, and very rightfully I would add, assumed that older people cannot work very fast on the computers, specially where a lot of work realates to data entry like journal entries, invoices entries, order entries etc.)

- And this one from a close friend of mine who is a partner in a Big Four company - Chandresh, if it is only for me, I would love to take an Indian Chartered Accountant with 15-20 years experience because not only are they experienced, but also more dedicated and have better understanding of the business and would take a lot of burden off my shoulders. However, our company mostly recruits university graduates locally and the philosophy is that if an older guy is put into the audit team, he would not gel well with the young ones, and would therefore create ripples in the team. (Which I fully agree to because older guys would have different tastes, more family responsibilites, entirely different attitude over dressing and what jokes he would normally enjoy etc etc. And as a team, life both during and after office hours matters a lot.)

And DT, it is not always true that you are as old as you feel - many a times it is you are as old as people around you feel you are. It is easy to say that to people in late forties and fifties when you yourself are in 30s and in demand. However, try to mix around with High school girls and boys and they will tell you how old are you and how they would not be able to enjoy your company on a Saturday evening. And at the same time, imagaine a situation where a grade 8 student is put into your office to do some basic tasks - but demands or expects you (the office guys in 30s) to give him same respect, and authority. Will you be able to do that - in practice???

Chandresh

Dear CD Members,

It is with great pleasure that I announce the official launch of "Mentors in Motion", a volunteer group with a mission to help New Immigrants find jobs in Canada.

Our SCOPE (Skills & Coaching for Positive Employment) program is 4 weeks in duration and assists internationally trained professionals to find and keep jobs in their fields. This Program focuses on developing effective job search techniques while also building solid business communications, presentation and networking skills.

We take pride in the fact that unlike other similar (HRDC funded) programs, we are a "volunteer group" comprised of Immigrants who can fully empathize with our mentees. Our focus is on job search skills only and we do not offer any settlement services. This focus helps us to maintain the quality of our program. It is our belief that once a new immigrant gains positive employment, other phases of settlement follow in natural progression.

For more details, please visit http://www.mentorsinmotion.ca.tf" rel="nofollow">LINK

Those CD members who contacted me last month will be receiving a registration form via email. The form is also available in the "Program" section of our website.

My special thanks to Sudesingh, Azazf, Lana2005 and My2Cents for helping develop this program and offering their services as mentors.

The SCOPE program has limited seats and is available on first come first serve basis.

Please contact us with any questions.

Cheers

DT
