You can always find jobs if you have proper connection and know the internal job listings of the companies. Btw..try for full time positions instead of contracting...as the companies are cutting down the costing of contracting positions...

References, for sure helps.

Not sure if you ARE in Canada or it's yet a plan. But being physically present, and visiting recruiters/agencies, in Canada will help you find a job.

Make follow-up calls. Apply for any job listed on website (worko, monster, etc). Next day call the recruiter - usually the job listing have recruiter's contact number and name. Talk to that person, tell him you have applied for this position. Describe your background. Try to convince him that you ARE a good fit for that position and that job is exactly what you are looking for. Last year there were 10 candidates for 4 jobs. Now there are 20 candidates for 2 jobs. You have to set yourself apart.
BTW, I got my first job in exact same manner.

Two thoughts:
1. Market is brutal. But have faith.
2. Good peoples are always in demand - no matter what time, no matter what economy.
