What is Canadian Experience? Immigrants Puzzle!
By:

Many new arrivals to Canada and Toronto in particular discover that they cannot get an IT job as soon as they arrive - no matter their level of skill or experience. The reasons given usually center around language skills and lack of "Canadian experience".

What is Canadian experience?

Canadian experience usually means having experience interacting with people in the context of the culture found in Canada. Every culture is different. For instance, relationships between supervisors and sub-ordinates vary from culture to culture; and country to country. And Toronto is the most cultural diverse city in the world!

How can I get Canadian experience without a Canadian job?

Getting Canadian experience without a job:
Volunteer. Volunteering for a charitable or cultural organization will help you to get Canadian experience and references.

There are many charitable and cultural organizations in Toronto and across Canada that need volunteers.

When you volunteer you are working. And you have someone that you will report to - a supervisor. You work with other people - usually in English.

The end result is that you gain Canadian experience. Experience that provides you with practical experience about the culture. Practical experience in speaking English and learning the local idiom, expressions, etc. And you gain References - from the person or persons that supervized you; and the people that you work with.

How do I find a charitable organization?
There are a number of groups in Toronto that can direct you to charitable organizations that need your help and in turn can help you to gain Canadian experience.

The Possibilities Project is a great place to start looking. http://www.possibilitiesproject.com/

I did not know about this site till a month ago. However, I do feel there are too many negatives on this site and too few positives. Why should I seek out losers?

Then why did you?

Chandresh

You wanna know why? Because I was told to go onto this site at the Mehndi masala masti mela. I did not go to it till this labor weekend and really I did not expect such a messed up site. I am still reading thru it and the more I read, the more I feel I am wasting my time but read thru everything I will and then make a decision to contribute or leave it all together. I only started to read it because of the person calling on all ex Dubai people.
You guys have over 8000 members and yet there is only a score of people regularly contributing. In my opinion the rest decided that it was too junky for them and a complete waste of time so just dropped out.
The only guys who come to mind that are worth it are Blue Lobster, Bambai ka babu and a Teja Gill. He isn’t positive nor negative but his writing and English is great. Teja, If you read this – can you let us know if you are an English prof. There are others who are good but the majority are “mandrax”.
If Singapore and HK were so good for you, why not go back. And if u r so marketable how come you don’t have a job as yet in your field. Only 11 months in 3 years you were gainfully employed in your field. Go learn some marketing courses, bhai saab. Or are you just kidding yourself? Or was that lady line lagaoing you and you were too slow on the uptake? Most people say these places are more stimulating than Canada even for IT folks like me. I am scheduled to go to S’pore on behalf of my company next month. If I find something suitable I might just jump ship.
Anyway again as to why I seeked this site out, I didn’t. It was given to me. Like my job at RIM. I did not seek it out it landed in my lap. But the analogy dies there. RIM is great. Canadiandesi uptil now sucks! However I will let you know once I’ve gone thru the full site what my verdict is.
Too bad to learn you’re a loser too, Chandresh.
And you guys about US and Canada- you are 100 % right. The Chinese at Microsoft spoke English for squat but we desis spoke it well in comparison to them. Yes there were many desis who spoke it badly, but Microsoft doesn’t care if you talk English. If you talk C++ and java you are tops!
Unfortunately even RIM hires only those who speak relatively good English. What that has to do with software development is beyond me. But heck I ain’t complaining- I am getting my roti kapka aur makan in style from them.

I have been following the forums on this site for many months now and I have to say that this site has been the most informative source for all potential imigrants. One can derive so much from the narration of first hand experiences of many desis who have endeavored in many ways to be successful in their forte.

Negative posts notwithstanding ,It is very easy to be "arm chair" critics and indulge in mindless rantings and personal insults.

Lets not get distracted into baseless arguments and stick to decent discourse on life in Canada, shall we ?

"Apan ko achhi job mile gai es liye Canada accha hi hey, baki jish ko nahi mile vao saab log falatoo me bakawas karte hey"

Really shocking thing ! Some people who sucessed here and they reply others like they are only smart and see their tone, really shame.

90 % desi people have not been in their field in Canada and if anybody from them disclose their things then why do you over react every time?

All I wanted to know was if you really found this site disgusting, why are you sticking to it? Or did you find something very interesting to spend your time and energy here, but still decided to contribute your negative post. You seem (or should I say, you claim) to be an intelligent guy to be able to take a quick decision to get out of this s..t, without worrying what you friend or aquintance at MMM would say. But you came out giving a long lecture - and even name calling.

If I were you, I would never bother calling a loser a loser since it would be a waste of time, energy, effort and a useless comment.

So my advice is (by the way, who am I to advise you - I am a loser) - you have not lost anything by becoming a member of this site, so why should you worry if you have to get away from it - and I mean not only stop contributing, but also stop visiting this site so that you do not waste your time.

However, I would be more than happy to have an intelligent discussion without name calling and give you replies to your queries and response to your comments on my decisions and situations and present status in case you are interested.

Chandresh
