How are the prices in Canada for clothes (office wears), kitchen items, daily consumables, in comparison to abu dhabi or india?
My intention to ask you guys is what stuff we should carry with us while immigrating to canada?
If we bring some stuff through cargo how much we have to pay from cargo agent office to mywould be house in cANADA

Anjana,

One of the posting in this site is

I think you should bring whatever you can. As regards to clothes, look more for western style outfits. If you can’t find good quality winter clothes in UAE/ India, better to buy them in Canada. One thing to remember is Canada has 120V/60Hz electrical rating and I wouldn't recommend any heavy duty electrical items (though a good step down tranformer will make it work). Furniture can be very handy. There is a good difference in price, mainly due to high tax rates in Canada.

Note that all items which you are bringing to Canada while landing or items that will follow you later is completely customs duty free. You should take advantage of this facility. You should bring a list of items (2 copies) accompanying you or that will follow you later, with a short description of the items and approximate values in Canadian Dollars. Don’t be stingy while preparing the list, you may even include an aircraft or a ship if you have one. The customs officer will stamp it and give back one copy, which is to be produced when your consignment actually arrives.

Hi Shibu,
Thanks a lot.I am aware of voltage system of canada so I have no doubts about the electronics. What I want to ask is Whether we should dispose off the old furniture which we have with us for last 5 years in Abu Dhabi and buy new one for canada and bring along or we should buy everything in Canada. Since I have a small baby so I don't want to make my life difficult. Is it worth to buy new things from here and pay cargo charges which will be Dhs.8 per kg.

For prices you can study some stores online like http://www.canadiantire.ca or any other stores.. You will have idea how much it will cost you to get the same furniture here.

If it is cheaper cargo go for that

Anjana,

a) If you have enough money with you and are planning to buy a house immediately, it is better to buy the furniture in Canada. You can plan better and meet your exact requirement with respect to size, fashion, decor etc.

b) If are going to wait and watch before you buy your house, you can bring your existing furniture (if it can be used for another 3-4 years) or even buy new ones in UAE (if you have little more money). There will be a major tax component in the Canadian prices compared to that of UAE, which will offset your cargo charges.
(to cross check it, you may visit the IKEA website for Canada http://www.ikea.ca" target="_blank">www.ikea.ca and checkout the prices- note that these prices will be before taxes. Compare them with the prices from IKEA showroom in UAE)
