A$5k a month at minimum wage (assuming $12.3 an hour) would work out to 406 hours for the month or 13.55 hours a day (if you include Sundays).

No wonder he doesn't check his emails.............

Just did a quick Google on the internet. I could be mistaken in my interpretation, but what this says is that minimum wages are $464.7 per week. If you assume that the standard hours a week are 38 then this would work out to $12.3 per week. However, if an employer is not constrained by a maximum hours requirement, he could require that the $464.7 be earned over a working week of 45 or 48 hours. In that case, the hourly rate would reduce to about $10 or so, which is a lot closer to the minimum wages in North America.

Like I said, my interpretation, may not be accurate.

The other aspect is the racism factor. Again, I've never lived in Australia (although I've visited it) but heard that the society in general is more racist. Not sure how true it is, however they I do know the right wing is pretty powerful there.

Based on wather, I would prefer Australia to Canada, but comprehensively speaking, I think Canada is better . Anyways, like they say, home is where the heart is.

good analysis, crenshaw.
I was also busy with my excel file calculating this stuff. However we need to consider that its not necessary that a security guard gets the minimum wage......12.3 AUS $
Also, there is a consideration of 1.5 times the normal rate after a set number of hours per week.

Have a look at this link...
http://jobsearch.gov.au/joboutlook/default.aspx?PageId=AscoDesc&ASCOCode=8311

which states a weekly earnings of 750$ (in average) for security guards

I met one romanian who migrated to Australia 5 years back. He worked as Dish Washer in a restaurent for 15 $ ( Australian) per hour. He was living comfortably. He showed me the photos of house ( Cost around 225,000 AUstralian Dollar) which was a good detached house. I told him that in Canada you get 7.5-8 dollars per hour. He was quite surprised.

I have a friend (a couple ) who has recently migrated 2 Australia six months back . Husband is a an FCA and wife is a Systems Administrator (Windows /Sun) . Initially they had an uncertain time for 3 months and were considering other options but I heard from them last that they had both landed into jobs in their respective professions .

Another colleague of mine working with databases has landed in Australia and is leaving for good in April - claims that jobs are easier to find and one lands in a suitable one in 2- 3 months time. Incidentally he has been offered a conditional job upoon acquiring data warehousing skills . He is the same guy to whom a recently posted 'IT Immigrant's Letter' was addressed to.

May be Australia is still to reach the saturation levels currently experienced by Canada as Immigration is new to Down Under .

Manasvi.
