Adding Spouse to Insurance .

My wife has recently got her G2 after attending an MTO approved driving course . She will be driving very occassionally , generally when I am also in the car ....

My q is with regards to getting her included on the Insurance :

a. How much premium increase is generally there when such an addition is requested ?

b. Is it better to wait till next year when she clears her G and then request the name to be added ?

a. Premium increase depends on a lot of factors, make / model of car, location, mileage driven / year etc.

b. If I'm not mistaken you're supposed to let your insurance company if there are any adults with a drivers licence residing in the same household, which may mean you'd have to add her name to your policy.

Another thing to keep in mind is, the sooner you add her name the sooner she starts building her driving history.

Won't she need to practice before getting her Graduate Licence

I think it will be marginal...(location/car model/year etc already accounted for by the pricipal driver).....but unavoidable....since she will have to be added, if she wants to drive at all.... I would think waiting is not an option....

There is a site... Kanetix...Which provides insurance quotes.....so, enter the data for yourself...... obtain quote.....then re-enter the details adding her.....you will be able to see the differential......

You can also call your insurance provider and ask on the phone.....they will inform you...

I hope you will be pleasantly surprised that there may not be any increase in premium when you call them to add your spouse to your insurance as she would only be an occasional 2nd driver. At least this is what I was told by my insurance company when I asked to inquire about the same. Its another thing that my wife never took the G2 license.

Please update here as to what your insurance does when you add your spouse to your insurance tomorrow.

When I was in Canada (2008), the extra adult driver was never charged the extra premium.
The main driver's premium will hold good.
So go ahead and add the name as a second driver. However, if the added driver is a youth, then the premium will go sky high.
