Also WM might run out of items in its own flyer, but price matching is usually with a competitor's flyer and I have done this successfully in the past without any hassle at all and with reasonable stock availability.

I wouldn't go to Walmart to buy very high end electronics but for things like a $115 tablet, printers, storage devices etc - they are very good at price matching. None of this "call the competitor to find out if item in stock" stuff. And they're not doing me any favors, the end result of this is I end up spending a LOT more money at Walmart than other stores. So it is a win-win.

And I think this will only get better with Target arriving.

Walmart got your foot in the door with an item that is pretty much out of stock to begin with. If they were making money from such sale, they would have more quantity than just 4-5 per store. You get to the store to find out it is out of stock. Now you have to do your grocery, wife needs some clothes and shoes, kids need some backpack and school supplies. You end up spending $250, save 69 cents on bread and $1 on cheese by price matching. You are happy and they are happy!

They have very narrow selection in electronics and very limited stock, so you would be very lucky if you could price match in electronics. The item has to be in competitor's flyer. You cannot price match in Walmart with online retailer or online pricing of a retail store neither can you price match with any store that is out of town.

Chances that you will end up buying something else other than what you had gone initially for in FS is pretty slim. Overall you can still save more in FS as compared to Walmart as long as the item is in stock.

I think going in to buy a tablet and coming out with shoes and cheese speaks more about one's shopping habits than Walmart's price match policy. :)

We can agree to disagree on this. I have price matched things like printers, external hard drive, vaccum cleaner etc. at Walmart and saved a bundle. They never called the other stores to check stock for this - just checked the flyer and date. Someone above just mentioned that he got the difference back on his previous BB tablet purchase, no hassles (think he bought 3 tablets, so probably got a sizeable sum back). So I'm not sure how this is the same as saving 69 cents on bread.

There is nothing unique about price protection offered by Walmart. Futureshop, Best Buy, Canadian Tire all have it, if price drops in 30 days, you can get the difference back.

In the last one year, I have price matched 5 electronic items in FS, one even with online retailer based in Alberta. I could not have done that with Walmart as they do not carry those items and even if they did they do not price match online retailers.

Pls confirm that you price matched within FS or other intra company where price dropped with in 30 days and not inter company (like FS vs WM or BB). Just to give a correct perspective to your contention !

Price match and price protection are different. I have price matched FS with retailers like Tigerdirect, Best Buy, Memory Express, etc.

You also get price protection in FS where if you find a lower advertised price of the same item, you can get the difference back+10% of the difference provided it is in stock with the retailer that you are price matching it with. If their own price drops below what you paid, they will refund you the difference ("item in stock" condition does not apply).

http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/help/our-price-beat-promise/hc80.aspx

I know Walmart also gives price protection (for two weeks?)if they advertise a lower price than what you paid. Since their Canadian policies are not online, I am not sure what their policy is with respect to other retailers, i.e., if you find a lower advertised price elsewhere after your purchase. I guess if the item is returnable, you could return the item, price match it if in any flyer and buy it again.

We can joke about it but today all big box retailers (especially grocery chains and departmental stores) would be bankrupt if it did not happen. If everyone came in for exactly the items that they sell at a loss or at cost and left with buying nothing else, there would be simply be no room to recover the money lost in items on sale.
