I need to buy an AC for a room of 150 SQFT and I have a choice of buying an window AC from Walmart - Fedders - 5000BTU, 1 year onsite warranty, 5 year part warranty or Goldstar - from Future Shop - 5000BTU, 1 year parts/labour warranty for $99.99
or
a portable indoor 9000BTU (3in1) AC from Bestbuy or Walmart at the price of $399.99.
Are there any significant difference in terms of performance and maintenance between an indoor and window AC when compared at the same BTU.
Your Take On this Please !.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....
"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
IMO, Portable A/c's are not truly portable. You still need a water outlet for it, and it's not feasible to keep moving it from one room to another.

Depends on what kind of accomodation you live in. If you rent, I would advise you to go for portable. Some of the portable ones come with an inbuilt tray to collect the water and you need to empty the tray when it gets filled or the AC would switch to 'fan' mode until you empty the water from the inbuilt tray. Most of them (I think) also come with a water outlet pipe that you can use to re-direct the water into a sink etc
With portable you don't have to cut a hole in your window frame. This would save you a lot of money in a rented home as you may have to change the window frame twice - once to fix a non-portable one and second time when you vacate the apartment. (One exception to what I said - If you are a carpenter, it may not cost you much to change the window frame )
If you own the house / if the place where you live has a window already designed to fit a non-portable AC, it would be cheaper for you to go for a non-portable one.
