An internal military memo refers to Afghanistan as "the Saudi Arabia of lithium," the report said.
.................................
Lithium is a key metal used in next-generation batteries for mobile electronic devices.

Suddenly, everything makes sense
This is not a good news for Canadian mining sector, I think CAD will weaken once mining contract are authorised . There was an article in Globe and mail about nickel being replaced by 'PEG nickel ' its a Chinese low cost invention, thus affecting profits of CA companies.
Any discussion on similar subject you could point to.

We the people on the main street are lured in stocks, currency, bonds etc with the sales pitch that since resources are limited oil, gold, etc and CAD will go up as CA has lots of it.
Now if USA starts giving mining permits to recoup cost of war in Afghanistan (already some given Chinese are already there)
and its not only lithium but all minerals (read full article) are there of profitable mining quantity in Afghanistan.
Once drill baby drill starts i am surely concerned of well paying oil jobs and Alberta.
There seems to be a lots of missing links in this story
- Why were Russia and USA fighting over Afghanistan in 70s? Were both the countries unaware of the mineral deposits?
- Isn't there a single geologist in Afghanistan who has any idea about Afghanistan's mineral reserves?
- The article doesn't mention availability of oil, nickel or diamonds, which Canada seems to have in plenty
- I believe that US companies might have started their R & D long time ago before making these news public, for economic extraction of the minerals as well as the application of those metals.
- Why does Iggy wants Canada to play a non-combative role in Afghanistan after 2011? He also wants a stake in these minerals?

Everyone will want to have a piece of the giant cake, including Taliban. Will that bring any peace and prosperity to that country is a trillion $ qn. There is oil wealth in Nigeria, Mexico and Venezuela. Afghan may go that way.
